Islamberg attack plot: 4 men arrested in New York state while ‘preparing to bomb’ Muslim settlement

Four men, three of them teenagers, were arrested and charged with plotting to attack the reclusive Muslim community of Islamberg in upstate New York. They had prepared multiple explosive devices and over 20 guns for the plot.

Police in the Rochester suburb of Greece arrested three men, aged 20, 19, and 18, and a 16-year-old boy on Friday, and found improvised explosive devices at the 16-year-old’s home. The devices were described as cylinders and mason jars wrapped in duct tape.

All four have been charged with three counts of possession of dangerous weapons and one count of conspiracy, all felonies. The youngest suspect has been charged as an adolescent offender. Between them, the four had access to 23 guns, Police Chief Patrick Phelan told reporters.

Phelan said that the investigation originally began after a child in a Greece high school overheard a classmate refer to one of the teenagers involved as “the next school shooter,” and told staff.

Their target was allegedly Islamberg, a rural hamlet in the Catskill mountains. Settled by a Pakistani cleric in the 1980s, Islamberg is home to several hundred Muslims and is the headquarters of Muslims of America, an organization that runs similar settlements across the country.

The Catskill mountains are freezing cold in winter, and may seem an unlikely place for a Pakistani cleric to settle on, but Sheikh Mubarik Gilani made the move there over three decades ago, fleeing crime and overcrowding in New York City. His mostly African-American followers who came with him said they wanted a better place to raise their children.

The community is an insular one, and the Muslims of Islamberg have been cautious about granting access to the press. AP reporters that were given limited access in 2017 saw buildings that blend Islamic tradition with the barns and clinker board more common to the region. The settlers tend animals, work in the locality and homeschool their children, free from Western influence.

ISIS Needs the US to Survive

“No war is over until the enemy says it’s over,” James Mattis, the former Marine Corps General and recently resigned secretary of state, is quoted as saying. “We may think it over, we may declare it over, but in fact, the enemy gets a vote.” Mattis’s statement was made in 2012, well before President Donald Trump, in a surprise announcement on December 19, declared victory over the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, better known as ISIS.

“We have defeated ISIS in Syria, my only reason for being there during the Trump Presidency,” the president wrote. He later expanded on that sentiment in a video message, posted on Twitter. “Our boys, our young men and women, are coming home now,” Trump noted. “We won.”

Taliban Used US-Made Humvee in Ambush That Killed Dozens

A lethal Taliban attack on an Afghan intelligence compound made use of a stolen Humvee to storm the compound’s gates and conduct a suicide bombing, illustrating how the US effort to arm counterterrorism forces ultimately provides weapons to terrorist groups.

The Monday attack featured a suicide bomber crashing into a training compound belonging to Afghanistan's intelligence service and Taliban fighters firing at the compound. Approximately 120 Afghan security forces have been reported dead, though the Washington Post notes Afghanistan's spy agency has not released casualty information.

The publication called it "by far the deadliest attack on any national intelligence target" based on preliminary casualty data.

The US military's sprawling Middle East campaign has often made use of local partners. When the US goes about arming said partners, time and time again, US-made equipment falls into the hands of Washington's adversaries. In 2015, then-Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi admitted 2,300 US-supplied Humvees had been lost to Daesh, a loss that then-US Defense Secretary Ash Carter attributed to the terrorist group's superior numbers.

A year before that, the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction reported that the Pentagon "provided over 747,000 weapons and auxiliary equipment valued at approximately $626 million" to Afghan security forces. The special inspector general also found that a majority of the US-supplied weapons were probably untraceable in DoD's systems, Gawker reported.

Washington spent millions for US warplanes to obliterate stolen equipment in Iraq in 2014. In June 2018, US warplanes conducted a similar mission over Afghanistan, destroying approximately 40 Humvees possessed by terrorist groups.

The Taliban has used Humvees for suicide bombings before, carrying out two such attacks in three days in October 2017. Humvees are made by AM General LLC, a US manufacturer based in South Bend, Indiana.

CNN’s Kirsten Powers: Covington Students Called Classmate ‘N***er’ with Hand Gesture

CNN political analyst and USA Today columnist Kirsten Powers bizarrely claimed on Monday that Covington Catholic High School students referred to a black classmate as a racial slur with silent hand gestures to their harassers — who were actually saying the word.

The alleged gesture occurred in the lead up to a confrontation between some of the school’s students and a Native American activist on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial during Friday’s March for Life event in Washington, D.C.

Initial video of a confrontation between Covington Catholic High School junior Nick Sandmann and Native American activist Nathan Phillips created a firestorm of controversy on social media, with both left and right-wing media observers accusing the student of racism. Sandmann, donning a red Make America Great Again baseball cap, is seen smiling as he stands in front of Phillips, an elder with the Omaha tribe, who is beating a drum close to his face. Some of Sandmann’s classmates were laughing and making hand gestures in what some say were attempts to make fun of Phillips.

However, additional footage paints a more complex picture of the events. In other videos shared to social media, members of the Black Hebrew Israelites — an ethnic-pride religious sect which has run afoul even of the far-left Southern Poverty Law Center — are seen verbally accosting the students, calling them “racist bastards,” “little dirty-ass crackers,” and “child-molesting faggots.”

The Black Hebrew Israelites also compare the students to dogs and hyenas and challenge them to a fight. At one point, as Powers notes, the harassers shouted at the students: “Ya’ll got one n***er in the crowd!”

The CNN analyst then claims one of the two students who responded to the slur, held up one finger — in her mind, “apparently referring to the one black boy in the group.”
