Jesus was born in the tribe of Judah. Being of Judah is 1 of many possible definitions of the word "Jew" and they are all different.
His mother was not a Jew and neither was he in the religious sense at all or he would have followed the Rabbis teachings. To say you are a "Jew because your mother is one" is Talmudic oral tradition not biblical.

There were Judeans, of the region of Judea and there were Judahites, of the tribe of Judah. “Jew” is a made up modern word forcing the identity of all Jacob’s descendants under one umbrella. Jesus was a Judahite, not a “Jew” in the religious sense of the word.
