Trump fires back at Nancy Pelosi shutting down SOTU speech — and says he's planning an 'alternative'

President Donald Trump excoriated House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) for refusing to allow the House of Representatives to invite the president to give his annual State of the Union address – and he hinted that he would not back down.

"The State of the Union speech has been canceled by Nancy Pelosi because she doesn't want to hear the truth," Trump said to reporters at the White House Wednesday.

"She doesn't want the American public to hear what's going on," he added. "And she's afraid of the truth."

"I will say that the American people want to hear the truth. They have to hear the truth," the president concluded.

"And the truth is all about and said," he said, "I think, and I hope, well, we were planning on doing a really very important speech in front of the House, the Senate, the Supreme Court, and everybody else that's there, it's called the State of the Union, it's in the Constitution."

'We'll do something in the alternative'

The president also hinted that he was working on an "alternative" route to hold the State of the Union address despite Pelosi's cancelation.

"We're supposed to be doing it and now, Nancy Pelosi, or Nancy as I call her, she doesn't want to hear the truth," he repeated.

"I think that's a great blotch on the incredible country that we all love," Trump continued. "It's a great great horrible mark. I don't believe it's ever happened before."

"So it's a sad thing for our country," he concluded. "We'll do something in the alternative, we'll be talking to you about that at a later date."

On Tuesday, White House deputy press secretary Hogan Gidley hinted at the possibility of an alternate venue for the speech.

"There are many ways he can deliver the State of the Union address," he said. "I'm not going to get ahead of anything he would announce."

Pelosi first asked the president to postpone the speech over supposed national security concerns that many found to be spurious. The president responded by canceling a trip that Pelosi and other Democrats were planning to the Middle East. Pelosi's latest move was to outright cancel the invitation for the president to give the State of the Union speech.

Verhofstadt: one European army to stand up against Putin

It looks like Europe will have one European army. French president Emannuel Macron and German chancellor Angela Merkel, the most important leaders in the European Union, agreed on it.

Guy Verhofstadt, former Belgium prime minister and chairman of the liberal ALDE-group in the European Parliament, was overjoyed by that deal.

“Macron and Merkel now fully back a European army”, he said. “That’s great news! A new Europe, a truly sovereign Europe, able to protect it borders, able to protect its interests, is the next thing we need to do.”

The danger, Verhofstadt told, comes from the east. “We must be able to stand up, if necessary, against Putin.”

“Do you know what the figures are today? We, the European countries, are spending 40 to 45 per cent of the budget of the American army. But we are only capable to fulfill 10 to 15 per cent of the operations the American army. We are three to four times less efficient than the Americans.”

“Moreover the reality is we spend three times more than the Russian Federation on military, but I’m not sure if the Russian army comes toward our borders, we are capable to defend ourselves without the American help. Having 28 different armies is a waste of money and at the same time it’s also a danger for our collective security and that has tot change.”

Ocasio-Cortez breaks with Dems, votes against bill to reopen gov't because it would fund ICE

'…our community felt strongly about not funding that'

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was the only Democrat to vote against a House funding bill Wednesday, citing funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement as the reason for her opposition, according to The Hill.

It was the 10th funding measure the House as voted on, and would fund the government through Sept. 30, the end of the fiscal year.

"Most of our votes are pretty straightforward, but today was a tough/nuanced call," Ocasio-Cortez wrote on Instagram. "We didn't vote with the party because one of the spending bills included ICE funding and our community felt strongly about not funding that"

Ocasio-Cortez was previously criticized by some on the left for voting for a funding bill earlier this month that would've funded ICE. She has in the past questioned "why we are funding [ICE] at all."

The bill still passed the Democratic-majority House 234-180. Ten Republicans voted in favor of it.

Does it really matter?

At this point, the repeated passing of funding bills in the House is just a matter of going through the motions, because Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has made it clear the bills won't be voted on in the Senate.

Predictably, McConnell blocked Wednesday's measure after Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) requested the Senate take it up for a vote.

The Senate will vote Thursday on bills that could reopen the government. One of the bills includes Trump's requested $5.7 million border wall funding in exchange for three years of protection for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients and some immigrants who are under Temporary Protected Status.

That bill would need some unexpected Democratic support to get the necessary 60 votes to pass. If it fails, The Senate will vote on a bill to fund the government at current levels through Feb. 8.

US refuses to withdraw diplomats from Venezuela, vows ‘appropriate action’ if they’re harmed

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has refused to pull diplomats from Caracas, arguing the government that severed diplomatic ties with the US is not legitimate and threatening ‘appropriate actions’ if anyone is endangered.

“We call on the Venezuelan military and security forces to continue protecting the welfare and well-being of all Venezuelan citizens, as well as US and other foreign citizens in Venezuela,” Pompeo said in a statement on Wednesday evening, adding the US “will take appropriate action to hold accountable anyone who endangers the safety and security of our mission and its personnel.”

Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro declared all US diplomats persona non grata on Wednesday, after Washington recognized opposition leader Juan Guaido as the country’s president. Guaido, however, said he wanted the US diplomats to stay, setting the stage for a potential diplomatic incident.

As the US does not recognize Maduro’s “regime,” his order for US diplomats to leave is not legitimate, Pompeo argued, adding that Washington will conduct diplomatic relations with Caracas solely through Guaido’s government.

After the Trump administration recognized Guaido’s government, a number of US allies followed suit, including most of the OAS countries and Canada. EU leaders also endorsed the rebel government.

Cuba and Bolivia have expressed support for Maduro, while Mexico has said it would continue to recognize Maduro’s legitimacy “for now.” Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said the US “handpicking” of a government in Caracas perfectly illustrates the true Western sentiments toward international law, sovereignty and non-interference in internal affairs of states.

Israeli Criminality, Hubris Invites Catastrophe in Syria

Israeli forces have shifted from a doctrine of “war by stealth” to openly declared aggression on its northern neighbor Syria. For two straight days, the Israelis bombarded Syria’s capital Damascus and its environs with dozens of air-launched cruise missiles. Many of the projectiles were reportedly intercepted by Russian-supplied air defense systems.

Nevertheless the Israeli blitzkrieg resulted in at least four Syrian military personnel being killed and damage to the civilian international airport near Damascus. That amounts to an outrageous war crime, as have countless air strikes carried out previously by Israel on Syria. Shamefully, the United Nations and Western governments maintain a hypocritical silence, while slapping sanctions on Syria, Russia and Iran over various alleged “transgressions”.

But what’s remarkable about the latest Israeli aggression is the public acknowledgement by the government in Tel Aviv. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, while on an African tour at the weekend, openly acknowledged the Israeli air strikes, as did the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF).

“We have a set policy, to target the Iranian entrenchment in Syria, and to harm whoever tried to harm us,” said Netanyahu on a visit to Chad.

In a statement, the IDF said: “We have started striking Iranian Quds [Revolutionary Guards] targets in Syrian territory. We warn the Syrian Armed Forces against attempting to harm Israeli forces or territory.”

Earlier this month, Netanyahu bragged to his cabinet members in televised comments about the “success” of repeated air strikes on Syria purportedly against Iranian targets.

That was also around the same time the outgoing IDF chief Gadi Eisenkot boasted to Western media about “running a bombing campaign” against Syria with “thousands of strikes” over recent years on an almost daily basis.

Rivlin warns Macron: Israel may have to hit Hezbollah rocket factories in Beirut

In Paris, president says Iran-backed terror group is manufacturing weapons under civilian cover in Lebanon’s capital, urges France to intervene

President Reuven Rivlin on Wednesday told his French counterpart that Israel could be forced to strike the Hezbollah terror group’s rocket-building operations “in the heart of Beirut,” a development he warned would drag Lebanon into a punishing regional war that neither side wants.

Rivlin made the remarks during a meeting with France’s President Emmanuel Macron at the Elysée Palace in Paris during an official visit to mark 70 years of diplomatic relations between Israel and France.

“If we are threatened from Lebanon, we will not stand by,” Rivlin told Macron, according a statement from his office. “Hezbollah is creating facilities to produce and convert precision-guided missiles in the heart of Beirut under civilian cover and with Iranian support.”

“This threatens Israeli security and could force us to respond, dragging the region into escalation that could badly harm Lebanon.”

The last major conflict between Israel and Lebanon was the 2006 Second Lebanon War.

Rivlin stressed that Israel holds the Lebanese government responsible for all military activity in its territory and urged Macron to use France’s diplomatic clout to convince Beirut to contain the Iran-backed Hezbollah.

“Lebanon bears sovereign responsibility for all Hezbollah actions,” he said. “France is a power with decisive influence in our region and it is vital that she understands that Hezbollah is part of the Lebanese system. I expect France to exert whatever pressure necessary on the Lebanese government to display its sovereignty and rid itself of Iranian and Hezbollah involvement that could lead us to war.”

Yellow Vest Protesters Call for Run on Banks, Withdraw Cash to ‘Frighten the State’

Yellow vests are calling for cash withdrawals from French Banks in a bid to disrupt the system and force the state to heed their demands.

The call comes as French Prime Minister Eduard Philippe said that about 80,000 law enforcement officers had been mobilized throughout the country, including about five thousand in Paris alone, ahead of the ninth wave of Yellow Vest demonstrations, scheduled for Saturday.

Yellow Vest protesters have called on their supporters to withdraw their money from French banks in a bid to disrupt “the system” and make the government heed the protesters’ demands, specifically related to their right to propose and vote on new laws, according to France 24.

The news network cited a protester identified as Tahz San as saying that they are “going to frighten the state with legal means, without resorting to violence”.

“We know that it isn’t the government that’s in charge, but the banks. If the banks are weakened, the state is also weakened,” he claimed.

Maxime Nicolle, another Yellow Vest protester, in turn referred to “a lot of people” who he said are ready to withdraw their money from the banks.

“Because you’re making money with our cash, and we’re fed up,” he added in a video posted on Facebook.

According to France 24’s business editor Christophe Dansette, these cash withdrawals will not affect French banks because the daily sum of cash a client is allowed to withdraw from an automated teller machine (ATM) is restricted.

“There is very little chance it will work. The amount of money French people have deposited in banks is estimated at €1.5 trillion, according to the Bank of France. Of this amount, €390 billion is currently (available). Every French person would therefore have to withdraw €5,800. This is very difficult, if not impossible, considering that cash withdrawals from ATMs are limited,” he explained.

The developments come as France is preparing for the ninth weekend of Yellow Vest protests, which are planned to take place in cities throughout the country on Saturday.

The French Interior Ministry, for its part, stated that the ninth wave of demonstrations may gather more than 50,000 ‘yellow vests’ in Paris and beyond.

The wave of so-called Yellow Vests rallies (named after the reflective garment French drivers are required to have in their vehicles) started in mid-November.

While the French government scrapped its planned hike in fuel taxes, which initially sparked the protests, the “yellow vests” have evolved into a broader movement against unwelcome government policies and rising living costs. The rallies have been marked by violent clashes between protesters and police.
