for some reason that part of the myth and legend is mostly glossed over, going from Christians eaten by lions to emperors going "hey this shit ain't so bad after all" (simplifying, i know)…

but politically it makes not much sense…

 

and that's saying nothing of the centuries of competing factions\churches\sects etc
