Why the 2020 Democratic primary could turn into 'Lord of the Flies'

The 2020 Democratic presidential race has just begun, but party insiders and strategists are running out of terms to capture the potential for chaos if several candidates raise enough money — and win enough delegates — to keep the race competitive deep into the primary calendar.

"Free for all," "Thunderdome," and "Lord of the Flies" are among the analogies.

It's even possible — many Democrats say more likely than at any time in modern history — that the leading candidate will finish with a plurality but not a majority of delegates, leading to a brokered convention.

"It's a real possibility, particularly if the field remains large until the end," said Jaime Harrison, associate chair of the Democratic National Committee and a former chair of the South Carolina branch of the party. "The DNC officer in me is cringing, while the political junkie in me is fascinated."

Trump mocks Michael Cohen's 'interesting' decision to hire former Clinton ~~lawyer~~ fixer Lanny Davis

President Trump on Thursday bashed his former fixer Michael Cohen for hiring Lanny Davis, a former White House lawyer in the Clinton administration, to represent him.

“So interesting that bad lawyer Michael Cohen, who sadly will not be testifying before Congress, is using the lawyer of Crooked Hillary Clinton to represent him - Gee, how did that happen?” Trump tweeted Thursday morning. “Remember July 4th weekend when Crooked [Hillary] went before FBI & wasn’t sworn in, no tape, nothing?”

Davis served as special counsel to former President Bill Clinton while he was in office from 1996 to 1998.

Trump brought up Cohen’s choice of representation the morning after Cohen postponed his planned testimony before Congress Wednesday.

Make 'El Chapo' pay for the wall, say Republicans

More than a dozen House Republicans proposed a bill this week that would let the Trump administration use billions of dollars seized from drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman to build the southern border wall.

President Trump has been battling Democrats for weeks to secure $5.7 billion in funds to expand the border wall, a fight that has led to a government shutdown for five weeks.

But legislation from Rep. Mo Brooks, R-Ala., would reserve up to $14 billion seized from "El Chapo" for the construction project. "El Chapo" is being tried in federal district court in Brooklyn, and Brooks said the fight with Democrats over money would become much easier if Trump had access to seized funds from the Mexican drug lord.

"The EL CHAPO Act kills two birds with one stone," Brooks said. "On the one hand, it shifts drug and blood money to border security and a border wall, thus helping to save the lives of thousands of Americans who die each year at the hands of illegal aliens or because of America’s porous southern border."
