Anon is incorrect on one point. I previously postulated that Marshall gave the order to Gen Walter Bedel Smith, Eisenhower's Chief of Staff. This was done to insulate Eisenhower and their political ambitions for him. Eisenhower was too much of a politician to get his hands dirty.
The method used to kill Patton can be debated endlessly because everyone involved is dead. However, logic dictates that the order came from D.C, and that could only have come from Marshall, who was already pushing a United Nations concept.
