No, wasn't pushing the Nick Cave stuff, but I think the tunnels & caves are used for trafficking, and the theory re: bats could have merit. Many diseases carried by mammals can jump species, or the humans in transit can be carrying parasites that infect other mammals. Doesn't even mean that the humans gave the bat disease to the bats, but could indicate critical immune challenges that laid them open to it. Agree it's speculation, but it isn't completely without scientific basis (was infectious disease scientist)
