In Babylon, the Jews developed what we know of today as Judaism, which is really rabbinical or pharasaical talmudism, based off of their reducing their oral traditions into writing, and collecting those writings into the talmud.
So back in the day, the Jews with God as their king practiced Judaism, with its animal sacrifices, temple, priests, etc., but as a result of the Babylonian captivity, that stopped and they started following their own set of rules or code of conduct, that they believed would stop them from again breaking the Law of Moses, and prevent another captivity.
The doom of Damascus is now thought to be a nuclear event; utter destruction, never rebuilt, fit only for animals to graze.
The Old Covenant is fading out, as God broke his twin staves, Beauty and Bonds, and allowed his people to be taken captive.
