Ebola spreads to high-risk area of Congo: WHO
The outbreak, the country’s worst, has killed 439 of the 713 people believed to have caught the disease. The fight against Ebola depends on tracing people who may have had contact with the disease and could fall ill and spread it further.
But the outbreak in a region of Congo with frequent fighting makes it hard for health workers to move around and monitor potential sufferers and to spread messages about how to avoid becoming sick.
Most of the cases since the start of the year have been in Katwa health zone, where the WHO said Ebola workers had faced “pockets of community mistrust” and most people falling ill were not on lists of people suspected of coming into contact with Ebola.

House Democrats Plan to Tackle Climate—with or without the GOP
Climate change is back on the table in Congress—at least in the House of Representatives, where Democrats took control earlier this month. As part of an effort to focus more on combating global warming, Democrats have revived a special House committee on climate that Republicans had previously eliminated.
But the Select Committee on the Climate Crisis (pdf) already faces big obstacles. The Trump administration has rolled back numerous environmental initiatives, even declaring it is pulling the U.S. out of the Paris climate agreement. The Republican-controlled Senate has placed little emphasis on tackling warming. Democrats are arguing over the committee’s focus; some even question the need for such a panel. The committee also lacks legislative authority (meaning it cannot move bills) and cannot issue subpoenas that would compel people to testify.

History’s Mysteries: The Great Moon Hoax of 1835
n August 1835, the New York Sun newspaper published the first of a series of articles about fantastic discoveries on the moon. These articles were purported to be reprinted from the prestigious Edinburgh Journal of Science. The author, a Dr. Andrew Grant, was introduced as a close colleague of Sir John Hershel, preeminent astronomer of that time.
Grant claimed that Hershel had discovered evidence of new life on the moon, including unicorns; two-legged beavers; bluish, single-horned goats; and furry, flying bat-like humanoids. There were trees and oceans and beaches and a chain of pyramids.
With the publication of these articles, circulation of the New York Sun exploded until it was the largest-circulating newspaper on the planet. The excitement of these discoveries motivated a committee of Yale University scientists to travel to New York to follow up on the story.
However, as details emerged, it was revealed that, first of all, the Edinburgh Journal had stopped publication a number of years earlier, so it could not have published the moon story.
Grant was none other than Sun reporter Richard Adams Locke, who a year later confessed that he was the author of the hoax.

Council of Europe calls on UK to ensure couples wed under civil law to protect women from Sharia
They named the UK, along with Albania, Azerbaijan and Turkey, in a resolution highlighting conflicts between sharia law and universal human rights. It called on the UK government to ensure the protection of those in vulnerable positions, and said it should run awareness campaigns to teach Muslim women about their rights.
The council also stated that it was “greatly concerned” about the fact that sharia law is being applied either officially or unofficially in member states with provisions that sometimes contravene the European Convention on Human Rights.
Specialist lawyers say many Muslim couples do not carry out civil marriages following Islamic ceremonies.

The FATF delegation had visited Pakistan in October. In a two-week visit, the delegation had assessed Pakistan’s efforts regarding anti-money laundering and countering the terrorist financing regulations.
The country is trying to get off the said list, on which it got placed last June. The Paris-based watchdog put Pakistan on its grey list for the deficiencies in the country’s Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Countering of Terrorist Financing (CTF) regulations.
