Australia backs Venezuela's opposition leader Juan Guaido as interim president

The Australian government has announced support for Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido after he announced himself interim president on Wednesday.

"Australia recognises and supports the President of the National Assembly, Juan Guaido, in assuming the position of interim president, in accordance with the Venezuelan constitution and until elections are held," Foreign Affairs Minister Marise Payne said in a statement.

"Australia calls for a transition to democracy in Venezuela as soon as possible."

The announcement comes after the United States called on the world to "pick a side" on Venezuela, as the country grapples with deadly mass protests and political unrest.

Mr Guaido claims he is entitled to the presidency on the basis that President Nicolas Maduro's reelection to a second six-year term was fraudulent.

Mr Maduro cruised to reelection last May amid low turnout and allegations of vote buying by the government.

Australia has now joined Britain, France, Germany, Spain, Canada and a string of Latin American countries in recognising Mr Guaido as Venezuela's interim leader until elections are able to be held in the conflict-stricken country.

Mr Maduro, who has led the oil-rich nation since 2013 and has the support of the armed forces, has refused to stand down and rejected an international ultimatum to call elections within eight days.

Disgraced entertainer Rolf Harris told to leave school after walking onto grounds, waving at pupils

Officials in London are probing a report that disgraced entertainer Rolf Harris walked onto the grounds of a primary school and waved at pupils.

The convicted sex offender went onto the premises of Oldfield Primary School near his home in Bray, Maidenhead, to talk to a sculptor working in the grounds, the Daily Mirror reported.

Harris, who was jailed for five years and nine months in 2014 but released on licence in May 2017, was then told to leave by the school's head teacher.

A Ministry of Justice spokeswoman said: "When sex offenders are released they are subject to strict licence conditions and are liable to be returned to custody for breaching them.

"We are looking into these reports and will take appropriate action."

Thames Valley Police (TVP) said an officer attended the scene and established that no offence had been committed.

Optus investigating potential privacy breach after customers logged in as other users

Optus customers are fearing a potential privacy breach after some users who tried to access their own accounts were logged in as another person.

The telco’s social media pages were flooded with complaints about the suspicious account activity which saw customers being logged in as "Vladimir" before their screen refreshed on a loop.

Other customers said they had been logged into an account belonging to a “Sarah”.

Optus confirmed the issue and was working with third party vendors to identify the cause.

"Optus is aware some customers reported seeing incorrect information when activating their Prepaid service, and when logging into My Account to pay their bill yesterday," a spokeswoman told nine.com.au

"As a precaution, Optus temporarily disabled the Optus My Account website for a period of time."

Optus said the My Account website is now operational again.

"We apologise to any customer who may have experienced this issue, and will be contacting any customer who may have been impacted," she said.

Customer Daniel Grallelis said he believed the glitch was a “massive breach of privacy” as he could see another customer's personal information when he logged into his own account.

"I just logged into My Account to check my bill, and I was automatically logged in as a different customer — with their name, mobile number and account number in plain view for me to see," he tweeted.
