Whitewashing occupation? Bill Shorten and the Israel Lobby

Racism and military occupation have no place in the modern world, and are certainly not something looked upon favourably by a majority of Australians.

Yet while apartheid, for example, has become a byword for shame and racism, the Labor Opposition leader feels comfortable asserting that some Israeli West Bank settlements are legal. That a regime founded on racism and military occupation can be considered at least potentially acceptable is exactly what Bob Carr is talking about when he says the right-wing Israel lobby holds inordinate influence over our political debate.

The West Bank, which is supposed to form the bulk of a Palestinian state under a two-state solution, remains a fundamentally divided society. There are separate services and rules for Jews and non-Jews in most areas of life: roads, water, land rights, the movement of people, and basic legal rights are all dependent on whether you happen to be Jewish or not. Effectively, the Palestinian residents of the West Bank are ruled over by Israel, yet are completely disenfranchised – something ignored by those who promote Israel as ‘the only democracy in the Middle East’.

In addition to the military occupation and restriction of basic rights within the West Bank, Israel is carrying out ethnic cleansing in many areas, ejecting non-Jewish residents for ‘military exercises’ or nature reserves. Jewish settlements just happen to sit in the areas not required by the state.

Refusing to condemn the settlements, in practice, means assenting to the continuing replacement of Arabs and Bedouins with Jews, in violation of international law.

Incredibly, a couple of weeks ago we saw Opposition Leader Bill Shorten telling the Zionist Federation of Australia that only ‘some settlements … have been decided or deemed to be illegal under Israeli law.’ This is not ALP policy, which says that all settlements are illegal, a position held by most of the world. Many Labor MPs were outraged that their leader seemed to be changing highly controversial party policy to reflect his own views.

‘Even Israel’s closest ally, the United States, regards the settlements as illegitimate,’ said Labor’s former Minister for International Development Melissa Parke when the issue came up last month.

Bob Carr told the media last week he believed that ‘extreme right-wing’ pro-Israel lobbyists in Melbourne have an ‘unhealthy’ influence on Australia’s policy towards Israel-Palestine.

Palestinians accuse Australian PM of 'bribing Zionist lobby'

Palestinian officials on Saturday condemned the Australian government’s decision to recognize west Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and called the move an “irresponsible policy that contradicts world peace and security.”

PLO Secretary General Saeb Erekat said that the Palestinians perceive the decision “as one wherein petty domestic policies steer irresponsible policies that contradict world peace and security.” The reference to West Jerusalem in their announcement reflects Australis’a inability to go ahead as was previously announced.”

Erekat noted that in his announcement, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison mentions that the decision was made in light of alleged Australian support for the two-sate solution. “However, the policies of this Australian administration have done nothing to advance the two-step solution,” Erekat charged. “In fact, Australia has chosen to join [US President Donald] Trump, [Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu, and two other governments, in voting against the two-state solution, in a UN resolution supported by 165 nations. Additionally, the Australian government is refusing to recognize Palestine as a state, voting in international forums against the Palestinian right to self-determination, and continuing to trade with Israeli settlements.”

Erekat said that “all of Jerusalem remains a final status issue for negotiations, while East Jerusalem, under international law, is. An integral part of the occupied Palestinian territory.” Australia’s announcement that it will open a trade office in Jerusalem, he added, “negates its very claim that it abides by UN Security Council Resolution 478, which refers to Israel’s annexation of Jerusalem as null and void and calls upon countries to withdraw diplomatic missions from the city.”

PA Foreign Minister Riad al-Malki said in a statement that he “rejects and condemns” the Australian decision. The decision, he said, “does not absolve the Australian government of its complete contradiction with the references of the peace process, which are based on international law that considers East Jerusalem as an occupied Palestinian territory, and that any recognition of West Jerusalem as Israel’s capital must be accompanied by recognition of East Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine.”

Malki accused the Australian government of “total bias” towards Israel. He also accused the Australian prime minister of seeking to “appease the Zionist lobby” in Australia. The Palestinians, he added, will study their future steps in response to the Australian decision in coordination with the Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, which consists of 57 member states.

PLO Executive Committee member Hanan Ashrawi condemned the decision and said it would be “unilateral, illegal and would jeopardize the chances for peace.” She warned that the “dangerous decision would undermine security and stability in the region and accused Morrison of “using Palestinian rights to bribe the Zionist lobby to gain its support in the election.”

The federal government has pledged to scrap the religious exemption from welfare benefits in an attempt to crackdown on parents who choose not to vaccinate their children.

Under the tough new 'no jab, no pay' laws, Social Services Minister Scott Morrison has announced on Sunday that parents will no longer be able to access childcare benefits simply by signing a form that says they object to immunisation based on 'personal, philosophical or religious' reasons.

Parents who refuse to immunised their children are set to lose up to $15,000 a year for every child when the changes come into force from January 1, 2016.

Meanwhile, families who do vaccinate their kids are eligible for the $7,500-a-year childcare rebate, $200-a-week childcare benefit and the $726 Family Tax Benefit Part A end of year supplement.

Former Australian Prime Ministers named in VIP pedophile ring

A woman claiming to be the victim of a “VIP pedophile ring”, which involved three former prime ministers, has alleged she was prostituted to “pedophile parties” at Parliament House in Canberra.

Speaking to media in Sydney, Fiona Barnett detailed her alleged abuse by the alleged elite pedophile ring 40 years ago.

The 45-year-old said she was abused by the ring, which included high-ranking politicians, police and members of the judiciary, at the age of five and claimed there were thousands of other victims.

“My experiences were horrific beyond words,” she said. “But the way I’ve been treated for reporting the crimes I witnessed and experienced has been far worse than my original abuse experiences.”

The northern NSW woman went on to detail “hundreds of crimes” she claimed she had witnessed, including child abduction, torture, rape and murder.

Ms Barnett described the alleged operation as a “very well-coordinated international pedophile ring”, and said there was a strict hierarchy.

“I was only saved for the VIP pedophiles,” she said.

“It’s a hierarchy, what I witnessed was the very top of the hierarchy.”

Ms Barnett said she “lives in absolute fear” and only decided to speak out because she “has nothing left to lose”.

She maintains the network is still in operation, and urged Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to make it a priority to “make the kids safe”.

Ms Barnett said she had taken the allegations to multiple health professionals in the 1980s, NSW Police in 2008 and approached the Royal Commission in 2013. She said she and other victims of “VIP” perpetrators were “stonewalled” by authorities.

ACT Police release a statement this afternoon after Ms Barnett’s press conference.

“The matter was thoroughly investigated by ACT Policing’s Operation Attest and there was no evidence to substantiate the complainant’s allegations,” the statement read.

“The matter was finalised and the complainant was notified on April 30, 2015.”

Earlier this month, A Current Affair, an Australian, prime-time daily news program, aired a story claiming that Vietnamese communities in the eastern city of Melbourne, Australia, were engaged in a "race war" with the Sudanese community that was "about to erupt."

The story featured an interview with Neil Erikson, a far-right extremist who has criminal convictions for stalking and racial vilification.

The Channel 9 story involved footage of two men, whom the reporter identified as Sudanese Australian, throwing chairs at a man at a cafe. The reporter suggested that this activity sparked a response from the Vietnamese Community in Australia, a nonprofit organization that represents Vietnamese Australians, to "fight back against African gangs."

In response, neo-Nazi and other far-right groups held a rally on Jan. 5 in the historically Jewish neighborhood of St. Kilda in Melbourne's inner east with the apparent aim of standing up to "migrant gangs" in Australia. Hundreds showed up.

This latest, racially charged series of events signals that white supremacy in Australia may have a growing, public presence, and immigrant communities in Melbourne are actively working to resist. On Jan. 26, the country will celebrate Australia Day marking the day the British arrived in Australia and began 231 years of colonization of Indigenous lands and peoples. Many Australians have argued that this date should be changed, but the current government has pushed a campaign to "save Australia Day," promoting white heritage.

Former Sydney Scoutmaster in court over child sex assault charges

A high-profile psychologist and former Scoutmaster is due to appear in court in NSW on Thursday, charged with historical sex offences.

The ABC reported Bob Montgomery had appeared as an expert on ABC radio programs, and was a guest doctor on Channel Ten's Big Brother.

At the time of the alleged offences in the 1960s, Dr Montgomery was a Scoutmaster in Sydney at Edgecliff and Marrickville.

He was extradited from Queensland to Tweed Heads on Wednesday to face offences that police allege occurred against three 12-year-old boys who were members of his Scout group.

Officers from the Inner West and Eastern Suburbs Police Area Commands began investigating the allegations last year after three men came forward.

The 75-year-old was arrested at a medical practice in Southport on the Gold Coast about noon on Wednesday before appearing at Southport Magistrates Court where investigators successfully applied for his extradition to NSW.

At Tweed Heads police station later in the day, he was charged with nine counts of indecent assault on a male and two counts of buggery.

In a statement, acting chief executive of Scouts Australia NSW Jane Siebum said Dr Montgomery's membership of the Scouts was terminated in 1965, and the Scouts had been working closely with the police on the investigation.

"Scouts NSW has zero tolerance for abuse of any kind," Ms Siebum said.

"The safety and protection of children in our care is our number one priority."

It's understood Scouts Australia handed information related to the alleged historical abuse to authorities during the five-year Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse, which wrapped up at the end of 2017.

"Reporting is a crucial part of identifying and dealing with problems," Ms Siebum said.

"Although these allegations date back over 50 years, it is very important that survivors are encouraged to report so that prosecutions can still be conducted.

"Once the police indicate an appropriate time frame, Scouts NSW will reach out to the survivors to invite them to participate in restorative engagement." Outside Southport Magistrates Court on Wednesday, Dr Montgomery's solicitor Colin Greatorix said his client denied the allegations and would "vigorously contest" the charges.

"He denies the allegations completely and it is causing him great distress," Mr Greatorix said.

Dr Montgomery was refused bail and will appear at Tweed Heads Local Court on Thursday.
