Climate change controversy continues to grow, with an increasing number of skeptics coming forward to speak out. Now, a top adviser to former Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott has just declared that global warming is a conspiracy pushed by a power-hungry United Nations.

Maurice Newman, chief business adviser to former PM Abbott, says that the global warming hoax has nothing to do with Earth’s climate, and everything to do with the United Nation’s establishing itself as an authoritarian regime.

For years, climate change skeptics have faced insults and ridicule for daring to defy scientific convention. but with a growing body of scientific evidence to dispel climate change mythology, it is clear that skepticism is more than justified.

Denouncing climate change

Maurice Newman says that irrespective of what climate data indicates, it has become increasingly obvious that the United Nations is using climate change as a vehicle to expand its power.

“This is not about facts or logic. It’s about a new world order under the control of the U.N.,” Newman reportedly stated in a piece for The Australian.

“It is opposed to capitalism and freedom and has made environmental catastrophism a household topic to achieve its objective,” he contended further.

Newman noted further that the overwhelming majority of studies “proving” the link between CO2 emissions and climate change are now known to be erroneous.

Two decades’ worth of climate stability should be enough proof that the climate catastrophe we’ve been hearing about isn’t actually happening. But, as Newman posits, climate change may be less about saving the Earth and more about growing authoritarianism.

“The real agenda is concentrated political authority. Global warming is the hook. Eco-catastrophists [ …] have captured the U.N. and are extremely well funded. They have a hugely powerful ally in the White House,” Newman states.

Climate change has been an immensely polarizing topic in Australia. Former PM Malcolm Turnbull was recalled over his stance on climate change, while new PM Scott Morrison is making waves by refusing to kowtow to climate fear-mongering. PM Morrison recently revealed that the “land down under” would no longer be contributing to global climate funds.

Authorities confirm Assange’s Australian passport was renewed last October

The Sydney Morning Herald reported overnight that the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) confirmed to a parliamentary committee this week that it renewed the passport of Australian citizen and WikiLeaks publisher Julian Assange in October 2018.

According to the Herald, Jennifer Robinson, who has served as one of Assange’s legal representatives for over eight years, submitted an application to renew his expired passport in “mid-2018.”

DFAT initially refused to process the application, according to the Herald. It reportedly informed Assange:

“Specifically, we understand you may be the subject of an arrest warrant in connection with a ‘serious foreign offence” within the meaning of section 13 of the Australian Passports Act 2005…. In order to progress your application, we require confirmation that section 13 is not enlivened by your circumstances. To this end, we ask that you provide us with confirmation that section 13 no longer applies to you. Until this time, your passport application will remain on hold.”

The implication is that DFAT’s decision to renew the passport several months later was based on an assessment that Julian Assange is “not the subject of an arrest warrant in connection with a ‘serious foreign offence.’”

Deputy Health Minister Yaakov Litzman on Wednesday addressed suspicions that he sought to use his position to help an accused sex offender avoid extradition to Australia, saying his intervention in the case was “for the good of the public.”

Litzman, who heads the United Torah Judaism party, was questioned by police last week on suspicions he sought to obtain a falsified psychiatric report that would have prevented Malka Leifer’s extradition on medical grounds.

Leifer, a former principal at the Adass Israel school in Melbourne, has been charged in Australia with 74 counts of sexual abusing her students.

“I have a lot to say, but I cannot speak about it. It was all for the good of the public, everything was legal,” Litzman said at an opening ceremony for the new children’s ward at Ashkelon’s Barzilai Hospital.

He added that his conduct in Leifer’s case was “exactly as I act with every request from the public — according to the law.”

Leifer once taught at a school in Israel affiliated with the Gur Hasidic sect, of which Litzman is a member.

A Justice Ministry official has told The Times of Israel that police acquired recordings of Litzman — the head of the United Torah Judaism party — and officials in his office speaking to Health Ministry employees and pressing them to act on Leifer’s behalf.

He is set to be questioned again by police later this week.

Litzman’s comments came days after a judge rejected an appeal from Leifer’s attorneys that she be released to house arrest, saying he could not release her on medical grounds unless he received an updated psychiatric opinion regarding her condition. Laifer’s lawyers claim her detention over the past year has caused her mental state to deteriorate to the point where it is “life-threatening.”

Leifer, an Israeli citizen, slipped out of Australia and went back to Israel in 2008, days before allegations of sexual abuse against her surfaced, in a plan orchestrated by officials at the Adass Israel school where she taught.

After authorities in Melbourne filed charges against her, Australia officially filed an extradition request in 2012. Two years later, Leifer was arrested in Israel but released to house arrest shortly thereafter. Judges deemed her mentally unfit to stand trial and eventually removed all restrictions against her, concluding that she was too ill to even leave her bed.

She was rearrested last February following a police undercover operation that cast doubts on her claims regarding her mental state, and has remained under custody since. The operation was launched after the Jewish Community Watch NGO hired private investigators who placed hidden cameras in the Emmanuel settlement, where Leifer had been living, which showed the alleged sex abuser roaming around the ultra-Orthodox town without any apparent difficulty

Just one in four cases of modern slavery are known to police

For every human trafficking and modern slavery victim that gets reported to police in Australia, there are four more that go undetected.

The findings were outlined in a new report released by the Australian Institute of Criminology, the first time the true extent of modern-day slavery in the country has been revealed.

Between the 2015-16 and 2016-17 financial years, the report estimates there were between 1300 and 1900 victims of slavery in Australia, such as those exploited into labour or sex and forced into marriage.

In the two year period, just 414 of those victims were known.

"There are estimated to be four undetected victims for every detected victim in Australia, meaning that between 928 and 1493 victims remain undetected," the report said.

Australia has been the sixth nation in the world to produce an estimate to the number of modern slaves in the country, with similar studies conducted in the UK, Ireland, the Netherlands and Romania.

While law enforcement agencies have kept track of the number of modern slavery cases reported to them, the report said estimating the true number of incidents in Australia had always been challenging.

"Many crimes do not come to the attention of authorities and may not be recorded even if reported," the report said.

"This is compounded in the case of modern slavery, where the collection of statistics is affected by the clandestine nature of these crimes, low reporting due to mistrust in authorities and fear of deportation."

The Roman Catholic Church took pains to deliberately hide the extent of its global sex abuse crisis, going as far as destroying documents and failing to compile records that could be used to prosecute perpetrators, a top cardinal admitted this week.

At an unprecedented Vatican summit designed to tackle the church’s lingering child sex abuse scandal, German Cardinal Reinhard Marx shed light on the institution’s many failures to tamp down on the problem, telling the gathering of more than 190 bishops from around the globe that “the rights of victims were effectively trampled underfoot.” The National Catholic Reporter has more:

”Files that could have documented the terrible deeds and named those responsible were destroyed, or not even created,” said Marx, beginning a list of a number of practices that survivors have documented for years but church officials have long kept under secret.

”Instead of the perpetrators, the victims were regulated and silence imposed on them,” the cardinal continued. “The stipulated procedures and processes for the prosecution of offenses were deliberately not complied with, but instead canceled or overridden.”

The Catholic Church is in the midst of a reckoning over its wide-scale child abuse allegations that span the globe and date back decades. Thousands of child victims have come forward describing their abuse, while hundreds of priests have been reprimanded by the church as a direct result. But only recently has the shoe begun to drop for the highest-ranking officials, including those who are either accused themselves of sexually assaulting young children, or allowed the abuse to continue under their watch.

Just last week the Vatican defrocked Theodore McCarrick, an ex-cardinal and the former archbishop of Washington, who was accused of abusing at least three minors and harassing adult seminarians. It’s likely the first time that a cardinal has been expelled from the priesthood specifically because of sexual abuse, but comes too late for McCarrick’s victims to pursue criminal charges against their alleged abuser.

Pope Francis, who has had a mixed record on addressing the church’s pedophilia problem, convened the four-day summit in a landmark effort to curb the widespread and systemic failures that turned the issue into a global crisis. A Catholic nun took bishops to task: “This storm will not pass by. Our credibility is at stake.”

Activists and victims of clergy abuse are calling on the church to adopt a “zero tolerance” policy that would apply universal standards for abusive priests around the globe. Even as more and more allegations of abuse come to light, factions within the church still deny its existence. The earlier case related to allegations from 1996. Cardinal Pell, a former adviser to Pope Francis, was convicted on several counts.

He was found guilty of forcing oral sex onto a 13-year-old boy after Sunday Mass in the sacristy of St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Melbourne. At the time, Cardinal Pell was the city’s archbishop.

He was also convicted of an assault in which he grabbed a boy’s genitals.

The second trial was to focus on allegations of child abuse dating to the 1970s, when he was a parish priest in his hometown, Ballarat, Australia.

Cardinal George Pell taken into custody after his bail was revoked

Convicted child abuser Cardinal George Pell is behind bars tonight after being taken into custody until he is sentenced next month.

The former treasurer to the Vatican is expected to spend at least the next two weeks behind bars after his bail was revoked today. He is due to be sentenced on March 13.

Pell was found guilty in December of orally raping a 13-year-old choirboy and molesting another after Sunday mass at St Patrick's Cathedral in East Melbourne in 1996.

“This is no more than a plain, vanilla, sexual penetration case,” Richter said.

He submitted a binder of documents to the court in Pell's defence, including 10 positive character references.

"These people love him; none of them believe he is capable of these offences," Mr Richter said.

One of the testimonials is from former prime minister John Howard, who became prime minister in 1996, the same year Pell committed his crimes.

Mr Richter said Pell had a great sense of humour and was a man of the "highest character".
