Consider the mortar board. A square shaped hat worn by graduates. The CUBE that covers the top of the head. It signifies that its wearer has been indoctrinated to the ways of the elite and will follow obediently the lessons taught by those that rule over them.
The pestle or cord that hangs from the board represents the 'hammer' used to turn solid form to powder. Thus the wearer of the mortar board represents that his true physical form has been reduced to powder- he has been indoctrinated to believe in the concepts of those that rule over him.
