Vatican Bank claims "significant" damages in Maltese courts

Issue dates back to 2013, investments worth €17 million

The Vatican Bank has started a civil action before the Maltese judicial authorities against various third parties it has accused of causing "significant" damages in relation to investment transactions.

The bank, known formally as the Institute for the Works of Religion (IOR), instituted the action against four companies and two individuals following transactions in which it said it had participated. Two of the companies have Maltese directors.

Details about the case, revealed in a statement, issued by the Vatican's press office, are still sparse, but a Vatican spokesman told Times of Malta the issue dates back to the beginning of 2013 for investments initially worth €17 million. However, the damages have to be quantified by the Maltese courts.

"This action shows the bank's willingness to accept responsibility for past abuses," spokesman Greg Burke added.

"This initiative confirms IOR' s commitment, in the interest of transparency, to report to the competent authorities any potential abuses perpetrated against it and to take, as in this instance, any appropriate action to protect its financial and reputational interests, including outside of the Vatican City State."

Insurance mogul operating in Malta ‘facing FBI probe’

An insurance mogul who set up shop in Malta in 2014 is reportedly being investigated by the FBI for alleged offences that could potentially include financial crimes, the Times of Malta has learnt.

American entrepreneur Greg Lindberg is reportedly facing a grand jury investigation after prosecutors last September seized records from North Carolina’s Department of Insurance.

Media reports in the US said the subpoenas listed several broad categories of potential offences, including those related to drug, financial services or money laundering.

Mr Lindberg did not respond to a request for comment by the Times of Malta.

Media scrutiny in the US has also focused on millions of dollars given by Mr Lindberg to the Republican party and donations to the Democratic party.

The American investor registered reinsurance company Standard Re in April 2015. It was given a Class 1 and Class 2 insurance licence by the Malta Financial Services Authority.

France, Spain, Germany give Maduro 8 days to setup new elections

BEIRUT, LEBANON (2:00 P.M.) – The French, Spanish, and German foreign ministries issued separate statements on Saturday that called on Venezuela to hold new presidential elections by next week or else they will recognize opposition leader Juan Guaido as the country’s leader.

“The government of Spain gives Nicolas Maduro eight days to call free, transparent and democratic elections,” Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said this afternoon.

“If that doesn’t happen, Spain will recognize Juan Guaido as interim president in charge of calling these elections,” he added.

In a similar statement, French President Emmanuel Macron said: “unless elections are announced within eight days, we will be ready to recognize @jguaido as ‘President in charge’ of Venezuela in order to trigger a political process.”

Nazi U-boat found in Canadian river

Just a week after a World War II German U-boat was found off the US coast, researchers believe they have discovered a sunken Nazi submarine buried in the bottom of a Canadian river - more than 100 kilometres from the Atlantic Ocean.

The sonar images, depicting what searchers now say appears to be a German U-boat about 18 metres deep in the Churchill River in Labrador, were taken in 2010 during a search for three people who had drowned.

After reviewing the photos recently, the researchers say they can make out the deck of the ship, cables typically attached to the top of U-boats, a gun mount and snorkels used to bring in air without surfacing.

"We were looking for something completely different, not a submarine, not a U-boat - I mean, no one would ever believe that was possible," searcher Brian Corbin told public broadcaster CBC.

The Valletta 2018 Foundation spent more than €40,000 on parties, receptions, dinners and alcohol during the first eight months of last year.

The information emerged in Parliament from Culture Minister Owen Bonnici in reply to a question by Nationalist MP Jason Azzopardi. The data supplied covers all the entities that fall within the minister’s remit.

According to the figures, until the end of August last year, the Valletta 2018 Foundation, tasked with overseeing the European Capital of Culture festivities, spent €40,231 on parties, receptions, dinners, the purchasing of alcohol and “other similar things”.

Throughout the previous year, the foundation spent about €5,573 on such activities, the tabled data shows.
