Rep. Pelosi to open Upvalley winery

Aug 23, 2005

The minority whip of the U.S. House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, and her husband Paul, have won approval for a 5,000-gallon-a-year winery off Zinfandel Lane south of St. Helena.

The Pelosis bought the property, once known as River Run, in 2004 from renowned architect Beverly Willis.

Responding to a question from Napa County planning commissioners Wednesday, Paul Pelosi vowed to improve sight lines coming out of the driveway onto Zinfandel Lane, where vehicles leaving Silverado Trail begin to pick up speed.

The only member of the public to address the commission was neighbor Fitch Robertson, who warned that in times of flooding Zinfandel Lane is often under more than a foot of water at that location. The property is adjacent to the Napa River.

The Pelosis will develop 1,000 square feet of caves, employ up to five people and have tastings for up to 10 people a week. They also received an OK for two marketing events a year with a maximum of 25 attendees at each one.

The approval came with no less than 22 conditions, most of which are routine since the facility is well under parameters set for small wineries.

The Pelosis sold a Skellenger Lane property in 2003 for several million dollars. The 16.5 acre Zinfandel Lane property is valued at $3.1 million, according to assessor's records.
