Ronald Kessler, a New York Times-bestselling author of multiple books on the Secret Service including his most recent, The First Family Detail, calls Alles's hiring "a breath of fresh air."
"He's already cleaning house," Kessler says, pointing out that Uniformed Division Chief Kevin Simpson announced his retirement a week after Alles's arrival. The author says Simpson, who worked for the Secret Service for 28 years and oversaw a division of approximately 1,300 agents, is one of many examples of an agency official who was at the agency during "the scandalous debacles" of past decades without being removed.
