Can we really trust Barr

OPINION: Bill Barr Needs To Answer For His Role In Ruby Ridge

The Second Amendment community has tried very hard to get members of the Judiciary Committee to persuade attorney general nominee William Barr to renounce his long-standing support for gun control. Opposing his nomination is not a position we relish. But if members of the Senate choose to ignore his record on guns, they should not ignore his role in the Ruby Ridge scandal.

Barr was in charge of the Justice Department during Ruby Ridge, and he knew what was going on.

Barr stated, under oath, that his chief gun priority would be the Ruby Ridge-like gun confiscation orders (sugar-coated as “red flag laws”).

You may remember that Barr’s federal agents descended on Randy Weaver’s Idaho compound in August, 1992, and (1) shot weaver in the back; (2) shot Weaver’s wife Vicki to death, while she was holding her infant son; (3) shot Weaver’s 14 year-old son to death; and (4) shot Weaver’s dog.

Courts subsequently largely exonerated Weaver, while excoriating the FBI and the Department of Justice. And, although then-Attorney General William Barr claimed to know nothing about the Ruby Ridge fiasco, a 1995 Washington Post article reported that there were 20 high-level DOJ calls about Weaver in the 24 hours preceding the murder of his wife — and two of them directly involved Barr.

DNC’s Donna Brazile Dedicated Her Book to ‘Patriot’ Seth Rich, Whose Death Made Her Fear for Her Own Life

Donna Brazile wanted only to rehabilitate herself and cash in on writing the first tell-all from the Clinton inner circle. But she knew they have unpleasant ways of making problems go away, so she needed some insurance against the worst sorts of retaliation. Her cryptic mentions of Seth Rich and subsequent refusal to elaborate on the subject may be a signal that killing her would set off mutual destruction.

Over the weekend, she confirmed that we crazy right-wing conspiracy nuts were correct in our worst suspicion: Seth Rich, it was reasonable to suspect, had leaked the DNC emails to WikiLeaks and was rubbed out to send a message to other canaries who might get in the way of Hillary's juggernaut. The killer(s) left his valuables behind, signaling that this was no robbery gone bad.

At the time, Brazile got the message. She shut her mouth and followed instructions, even shaming people who shared her worries about the murderous ruthlessness:

Seth Rich was a hard worker and proud to be an American. This desire to scar Seth's legacy to his country and party is shameful. https://t.co/2cw5GZOYXO

Powerful explosion reported at Venezuela’s La Guaira Port

The Nacional media outlet reported that fire brigades had arrived on the scene without revealing additional details or the cause of the explosion.

La Guaira, the capital city of Venezuela’s northern Vargas state and the nation’s primary port, was founded in 1577 and has been the scene of several key naval battles during the late-20th-century forming of the oil-rich South American country.

Authorities in Mexico, US find suspected stash house for human trafficking

Law enforcement officials on both sides of the border are investigating claims by a 17-year-old Guatemalan teen and his father that they had been held against their will by a human smuggling operation in Colonia Rancho Anapra in Mexico.

The teen was apprehended by Border Patrol agents near Mount Cristo Rey in Sunland Park, according to a Border Patrol news release. Agents noticed that he had facial injuries and began investigating further. The 17-year-old stated that he and his father were beaten while being held in a stash house against their will.

He said that he and his father attempted to escape, but became separated. The smugglers were able to catch up to him and began to physically assault him, the teen told border agents. He was able to escape again during the assault and ran north across the international border where agents apprehended him.

He said he did not know where his father was and said he feared the smugglers would hurt or kill him.

A short time later, his father was apprehended by Border Patrol agents while illegally crossing the border approximately a mile and a half from where his son had been encountered. The father informed agents that he had been separated from his son during an escape attempt from a house in Mexico and believed smugglers might have killed his son.

U.S. Supreme Court Takes Second Amendment Challenge To A Gun Control Law

Last week, the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to hear a Second Amendment challenge to a gun control law for the first time in nearly 10 years. Arguments in the case will likely be heard during the court’s next term, which starts in October.

During the opening decade of the 21st Century, the U.S. Supreme Court issued two landmark rulings that many hoped would revitalize the Second Amendment, which had been all but read out of the Constitution by activist lower judges that favored banning or heavily restricting firearms.

District of Columbia v. Heller (2008) and McDonald v. City of Chicago (2010) made abundantly clear that the Second Amendment is a fundamental civil right and should be respected as such by the nation’s courts and public officials.

Senate Votes to Require Women to Register for the Draft

Update, April 27, 2017: Since this article was published in June 2016, the military policy bill was restructured and the language requiring women to register for selective service was removed. The bill passed with language calling for a review of the current rules. Read more in our fact check of viral claims to the contrary.

WASHINGTON — In the latest and perhaps decisive battle over the role of women in the military, Congress is embroiled in an increasingly intense debate over whether they should have to register for the draft when they turn 18.

On Tuesday, the Senate approved an expansive military policy bill that would for the first time require young women to register for the draft. The shift, while fiercely opposed by some conservative lawmakers and interest groups, had surprisingly broad support among Republican leaders and women in both parties.

Ex-employees sue defense contractors Fluor and KBR in multi-million dollar fraud claim

A group of six veterans is suing two military contracting companies, claiming they overcharged the government hundreds of millions of dollars for work in Afghanistan.

Fluor Corp., which provides services at 70 forward operating bases in northern Afghanistan, was served with the lawsuit this month after a five-year investigation. Former Halliburton Corp. subsidiary KBR, a Houston-based military contractor, was also named in the suit and served notice this month.

The allegations of fraud were brought forward by former Fluor employees. The group sued under a federal law that allows private plaintiffs to file whistleblower cases on behalf of the government. The plaintiffs could receive 30 percent of any funds the government might recover.

The six former employees brought five separate lawsuits, but their lawyers are focusing their efforts on one lead suit brought by Charles R. Shepherd, a former Army officer who served 17 years before retiring as a captain in 1990, and Danny V. Rude, a retired Army first sergeant with 20 years of active duty service. Both began working for Fluor in 2009 and claim that they and the other plaintiffs were all fired in retaliation after complaining about the company’s practices.

The U.S. attorney’s office in South Carolina declined to join the suits in October, after which the claims were unsealed.
