4.Feinstein had an up-close experience in 1978 related to gun control: As president of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, she discovered the body of Harvey Milk, the city's first openly gay supervisor, in his office. Dan White, a former supervisor, fatally shot then-Mayor George Moscone and then Milk. Feinstein took over as San Francisco's mayor, a position she had unsuccessfully competed for before replacing Moscone and then being elected and holding the job until 1989.
