If we're gonna climb the ladder, Gallo is key.

A few of Pelosi's major donors represent business interests that give generously to members of both parties. These include the owners of E. & J. Gallo Winery in Modesto and their families, who have given Pelosi $76,000. They have lobbied on such issues as agricultural subsidies, liquor labeling laws and business tax breaks. Another big source of contributions was employees of the law and lobbying firm Akin, Gump, Strauss, Hauer and Feld, which represents interests ranging from Arizona Indian tribes to the Pacific Gas and Electric Co.

"I'm just calling to encourage you to support Nancy Pelosi for whip," Gallo said to Dooley's surprise. Pelosi, the liberal 61-year-old who represents San Francisco in the House of Representatives, was running hard for the second-highest Democratic leadership position in the House.
