MSM was in 29 Palms trying to get the locals to say that Joshua Tree National Monument was all jacked up because of the shut down. Locals were refusing to take the bait. there are a lot of gold mines - spent a lot of time in them when i was a kid. Not really a place for trafficking because digging requires removal of A LOT of rock - just not easy. Definitely a good place to hide dead bodies though. Lots of people have tried over the years - to varying success
