Pope Street, often referred to in early deeds as the "County Road," was not named for a religious leader but for where it leads: Pope Valley. In the buckboard days, travelers had to negotiate the winding mountain road to reach the little town to the north, passing such points of interest as Conn Valley (home of John and Connelly Conn, whose descendent is Supervisor Diane Dillon) and Edwin Angwin's potato farm. Church Street, on the other hand, does have a spiritual history. On it was the Sharon Baptist Church, which is also still there at number 1250, disguised as an office building.
