Washington approves sale of Aegis Ashore systems
WASHINGON (Jiji Press)โThe U.S. State Department has approved the sale of two Aegis Ashore missile defense systems to Japan for a total of $2.15 billion, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency said Tuesday.
The agency notified Congress of the planned sale on the same day.
โThis proposed sale will provide the Government of Japan with an enhanced capability against increasingly sophisticated ballistic missile threats and create an expanded, layered defense of its homeland,โ the agency said in a statement.
Subject to the deal are two Aegis Weapon Systems and related equipment, according to the State Department.
Separately, the Japanese government plans to procure state-of-the-art LMSSR (Lockheed Martin Solid State Radar) radars for the Aegis Ashore systems directly from the U.S. manufacturer.
The Japanese government aims to deploy the two Aegis Ashore systems in Akita and Yamaguchi prefectures along the countryโs Sea of Japan coast
