Something about they have become addicted to something they get from consuming human blood or blood products or biological fluids, CS fluid maybe. Their own adrenal glands become down-regulated as a result of receiving regular external supply. As a result they really are "SICK" because their body can no longer produce substances that are necessary for live and homeostasis.
A hypothesis. We have circumstantial evidence of many data points that could support this hypothesis but do not totally prove it.

Or in a more general sense since we don't know exactly which gland(s) are malfunctioning in these "SICK" individuals, let's say their entire endocrine system becomes down-regulated and can no longer produce necessary hormones etc.
