Department of Justice Recognizes Human Trafficking Prevention Month and Announces Update on Efforts to Combat this Violent Crime

In December 2018, President Trump proclaimed January 2019 as National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month, dedicating the month to raising national awareness of the issue of human trafficking and highlighting efforts to combat this violent crime. Over the last year, the Department of Justice fought human trafficking through investigating and prosecuting traffickers, dismantling transnational human trafficking networks, enhancing victim identification and protection of all victims of trafficking, and funding and providing domestic and international anti-trafficking programs.

"Human trafficking is a horrific crime against the human dignity of the victims, and it can have no place in our society," Acting Attorney General Matthew G. Whitaker said. "But the Department of Justice is taking action against the traffickers. In fiscal year 2018, the Department of Justice secured over 500 human trafficking convictions – an increase from the previous fiscal year. We also filed a record number of new cases. And in districts where our new Anti-Trafficking Coordination Teams are in place, we have ramped up the number of trafficking prosecutions. Pathology Laboratory Agrees to Pay $63.5 Million for Providing Illegal Inducements to Referring Physicians

Pathology laboratory company Inform Diagnostics has agreed to pay $63.5 million to settle allegations that it violated the False Claims Act by engaging in improper financial relationships with referring physicians, the Justice Department announced today. Inform Diagnostics, formerly known as Miraca Life Sciences Inc., is headquartered in Irving, Texas, and was a subsidiary of Miraca Holdings Inc., a Japanese company, during the period relevant to the case. In 2017, majority ownership of the company changed, and the company was renamed.

“The Department of Justice has longstanding concerns about improper financial relationships between health care providers and their referral sources because those relationships can alter a physician’s judgment about the patient’s true health care needs and drive up health care costs for everybody,” said Assistant Attorney General Jody Hunt of the Department of Justice’s Civil Division. “In addition to yielding a substantial recovery for taxpayers, this settlement should deter similar conduct in the future and help make health care more affordable.”

Senators Reintroduce 'Sarah's Law' On Anniversary Of Sarah Root's Death

It has been three years since Sarah Root was struck and killed in Omaha by Edwin Mejia, who entered the country illegally and was driving drunk.

On Thursday, the anniversary of of her death, Iowa Senator Joni Ernst, along with Senators Chuck Grassley, Ben Sasse, Deb Fischer and eleven of their colleagues, re-introduced legislation in honor of Sarah. The legislation, aptly named Sarah's Law, would allow federal law enforcement to detain illegal immigrants criminally charged with killing or seriously injuring another person.

Following his arrest for Motor Vehicle Homicide, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement declined to issue a detainer on Mejia. Subsequently, he posted bond, fled the country and still remains at-large.

Democrat Delegate Kathy Tran, who submitted the horrifying legislation that would have allowed babies to be murdered even after birth, also filed legislation to ensure the sanctity of life for “fall cankerworms.”

Tran filed “H.B. 2495 Fall cankerworm; spraying prohibited during certain months,” a bill that would protect the lives of caterpillars and other insects during certain months, on the same day she filed “H.B. 2491 Abortion; eliminate certain requirements,” the defeated legislation that would have made it legal for a new mother to give birth, then determine that she does not want the child and have it killed.

H.B. 2495 would protect the lives of gypsy moths, cankerworms, and other insects that may carry diseases harmful to humans, by preventing pest control spraying for them between the months of March and August.

Governor Who Endorsed Infanticide Received $2 Million From Planned Parenthood

Public records reveal Virginia Governor Ralph Northam, who endorsed infanticide as a form of abortion on Wednesday, received almost $2 million in campaign contributions from Planned Parenthood.

Research reveals nearly $2 million in campaign contributions from the taxpayer funded pro-abortion group Planned Parenthood sent to Northam, who endorsed a bill that would allow new mothers to determine whether they wanted to keep a child after delivery, essentially legalizing infanticide.

Northam received $1.996 million from Planned Parenthood Virginia over the course of five years, with most of the donations coming in during his 2017 election campaign. These include massive cash injections of $338,852, $278,247, $255,641, and other similar amounts in the final days before the election.
