i don't really fully understand the phenomenon, but i think it is spiritual in nature for sure. the least spiritually developed are the most suspectible to this NPC like state. would you agree or disagree?

if there is such a thing as the collective unconscious, it's as if it's split in two and now there are two modes of seeing the world, with the one you're describing much more rigid than the other. it's underdeveloped spiritualily.
if your legs were underdeveloped - let's say you only had bones, with no muscle fiber, blood, and skin to hold it in - they wouldn't function and you couldn't walk. it's like they can't understand no matter what
i like your post. i don't think the 2 ideas are mutually exclusive. for instane, non-NPCs could be eternal spirits whereas the NPCs might not be. in that case they would function more like freddy kreuger in our world. maybe the NPC thing is truer than it seems. maybe they're more like mobs in video games than NPCs. as in when you play a game (or dream a dream) you need an enemy to fight against otherwise you can't even use the battle system and the program would infinite loop

it's not really about faith or about being religious or super-religous. being super-religious is actually in most cases a positive id on being an NPC. spiritual development is very different from exposure to religion or even fanaticism
