Brookfield Asset Management Inc. is considering making an offer for Dutch phone company Royal KPN NV, according to people familiar with the matter. KPN shares jumped the most since 2013.

Royal KPN is not just a Dutch phone company, it is also a Dutch provider of Internet access. It is not the first time that there was an attempt to making an offer. In 2013, Mexican America Movil tried this but it did not go through. The acquisition plans of KPN by the Mexican company were already partly blocked after the foundation called 'Stichting Preferente Aandelen B KPN' blocked the acquisition via a protection mechanism. This foundation has special shares with which it can make a takeover attempt more difficult.

In an earlier article from 23-2-2018, The UN Broadband Commission for Sustainable Development wants all countries to have a funded national broadband plan by 2025 as part of its efforts to make internet available to more people. The commission, which is backed by America Movil owner Carlos Slim among others, set targets for 2025 in support of “connecting the other half” as it considers this important to achieving its Sustainable Development Goals.
