Senator Cory ‘Spartacus’ Booker (D-NJ) announced his 2020 presidential bid from his Twitter account Friday morning.

Booker’s message? “We Will Rise.”

The two-and-a-half minute video Booker posted to Twitter was littered with Marxist doublespeak of “collective action,” “collective will” and class warfare.

“I believe that we can build a country where no one is forgotten, no one is left behind; where parents can put food on the table; where there are good-paying jobs with good benefits in every neighborhood; where our criminal-justice system keeps us safe, instead of shuffling more children into cages and coffins; where we see the faces of our leaders on television and feel pride, not shame,” Cory Booker said in the video posted to Twitter.

“I’m running for president. Join me on this journey,” Booker tweeted on Friday morning.

Booker is the fourth Democrat senator to launch a presidential bid this campaign cycle, joining Pocahontas Warren (MA), Kamala Harris (CA) and Kirsten Gillibrand (NY).

Venezuela Gold Mystery Grows As 20-Ton Pile Remains Stuck In Limbo

With embattled Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro reportedly preparing to ship 20 tonnes of gold to the United Arab Emirates, opponents of his regime - including one US senator and former presidential candidate - are scrambling to try and stop him.

As we reported Thursday, Maduro's government reportedly shipped three tonnes of gold to the UAE last week, and, though reports on the exact number vary, he is believed to be preparing to ship another 20 tonnes in the near future. Earlier this week, a member of the Venezuelan opposition warned that a Russian jetliner had landed in Caracas, purportedly with the intent of spiriting away a hefty slice of the country's already dwindling gold reserves.

But while that plane left allegedly without any gold on board, in its place another plane from Dubai landed, prompting a wave of speculation that Maduro is planning to ship more gold to the UAE, according to Bloomberg. The gold is valued at some $850 million.

Taken together, the 20 tonnes of gold represent more than 10% of Venezuela's dwindling reserves.

Twenty tons is a lot of gold bars - almost 1,600 of them. Together, they represent about 10 percent of all the Venezuelan central bank’s foreign reserves. Those assets form a key part of the fierce battle for control of Venezuela’s finances between Maduro and Juan Guaido, the National Assembly leader who is trying to install a transitional government with the support of the U.S. and other countries across the region.

Rumors about Maduro's quest to expatriate the gold come after the Bank of England denied Maduro officials’ request to withdraw $1.2 billion of gold stored in BoE vaults after US officials intervened.

But Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, who has become one of the most outspoken US officials agitating for the toppling of the Maduro regime, tweeted on Thursday that a French national working for Abu Dhabi-based Noor Capital was in Venezuela on Thursday to arrange the "theft" of more gold. He added that the firm, its employee and the airline it hired to help move the gold could be subject to US sanctions.

US withdraws from INF Treaty in 180 days – Pompeo

Washington has suspended its participation in the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has said, adding that it may return to the agreement in 180 days if Moscow meets its demands.

“The US… suspends its obligations under the INF Treaty effective February 2,” Pompeo told journalists during a briefing.

He also said that Washington will notify Russia and other states that it fully withdraws from the accord in six months.

Pompeo repeatedly blamed Moscow for this development while accusing it of “brazenly” and “shamelessly” violating the agreement. He also once again issued an ultimatum to Moscow.

“If Russia does not return to full and verifiable compliance with the treaty within the six-month period by verifiably destroying its INF-violating missiles, their launchers and associated equipment, the treaty will terminate,” he said.

At the same time, he still claimed that the US “is hoping that we can put our relationship with Russia on a better footing.” However, he said that Moscow should change its course from what he called “destabilizing activity not only on this issue but on other issues as well.”

‘Are we meddling?’ Max Blumenthal confronts lawmakers on what America’s doing in Venezuela

US members of Congress freeze, fumble and deliver bewildering answers to award-winning journalist Max Blumenthal as he asks Capitol Hill politicians what they think of the US’ open support for Venezuela’s opposition.

Many members of the US Congress are greatly concerned by supposed ‘Russian meddling’ in American affairs. But what do they think about Washington openly getting behind the opposition in Venezuela? In a video, published on his website, the Grayzone Project, Blumenthal asked lawmakers just that.

The politicians were visibly caught off guard by pretty simple and straightforward questions. Several lawmakers couldn’t provide a definitive answer to whether the US public support for opposition leader Juan Guaido could be considered ‘meddling’ in a foreign nation’s affairs.

“Haven’t thought about that,” a baffled lawmaker was heard saying when asked how he would react if Russia recognized House Speaker Nancy Pelosi as president of the US.

Washington did something similar to that last week, when President Donald Trump recognized the speaker of Venezuela’s opposition-controlled parliament, Guaido, as the legitimate leader of the country.

Some, like Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez outright refused to answer questions on Venezuela, saying she is “working on a response.” Others denied that the wholesale US support for Guaido against President Nicolas Maduro constitutes ‘meddling,’ albeit failing to coherently explain why.

“I think we’re just supporting the people and supporting what they are deciding needs to happen, and so I think it’s good of us since we are the bastion of freedom,” Vicky Hartzler, a Republican from Missouri, stated.

Her Democratic colleague, Rosa DeLauro of Connecticut, was passionate about protecting Robert Mueller’s probe into the so-called ‘Trump-Russia collusion.’ When asked about meddling in Venezuela, she mumbled: “I don’t know. There’s been a lot against Maduro, who’s awful.”

Only Missouri Democrat Lacy Clay said that the US policy in South America and the Caribbean is “something we should not be proud of.” He opposed the “embargo” on Caracas because its people “will suffer more.” However, even he wasn’t sure whether it was “good meddling or not,” saying that Venezuela wasn’t his “issue.”

Alongside the US, Juan Guaido was recognized as the interim president of Venezuela by a majority of South American countries, including neighboring Colombia and Brazil. France, Spain and Germany vowed to follow suit unless Nicolas Maduro calls a snap election. Their ultimatum was firmly rejected by Maduro. States including Russia, China, Iran and Turkey continue to recognize Maduro as the democratically elected leader of Venezuela.

Child sex trafficking ring operating blocks from White House shut down by federal agents

Federal cases increased by 20 percent over a two-year period

A child sex trafficking ring that operated blocks from the White House was one of the trafficking rings broken up by federal agents over a two-year period, WRC-TV reported.

What are the details?

The TV station examined U.S. Justice Department data on trafficking cases between 2015 and 2017 and found that the number of people facing federal trafficking charges increased by 20 percent, according to its report. Case files from Virginia and Maryland showed that trafficking crimes often turn into federal cases because the criminals cross state lines while selling girls for sex, the TV station found.

"Traffickers move people up and down the East Coast, traveling through Richmond, Washington, D.C., and Baltimore," Zachary Terwilliger, U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, told the news outlet.

"This can be happening in hotels, this can be happening in bars — it runs the whole gamut," he added.

In one of the cases from 2017, two Prince William County men "advertised a 15-year-old girl online and sold her for sex at hotels in Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C.," according to the report. The TV station obtained surveillance footage that showed the men driving the victim to a hotel, where she was sold for sex just six blocks from the White House.

Christian Hood and his accomplice, Abdul Bangura, are serving 11-year prison terms for sex trafficking, WRC reported.

What about this surge?

An anti-trafficking organization, the Polaris Project, reported that the number of cases reported to a national trafficking hotline surged by 25 percent in 2018.

"The significant increase in cases we're handling this year is a reflection of the more targeted and better-informed efforts to raise awareness about the true nature of human trafficking in the United States," Caroline Diemar, director of the National Human Trafficking Hotline, told WRC.

Law enforcement and victim advocates say the impact is severe. The trauma that traffickers inflict on their victims can last long after justice is served.

"A number of victims are still under the control of their traffickers. They've been manipulated. They feel a lot of trauma because of what has happened to them," said Maureen Cain, a federal prosecutor in Alexandria who handles trafficking cases.

What else?

Although the increase in arrests and prosecutions is a positive development, the problem of trafficking is not new, said victim's advocate Elisabeth Corey.

"In the past, there just wasn't a name for it, and there weren't enough people saying this is wrong," said Corey, who also writes a blog on the topic. "That's what's changing."

Twitter has announced that it took down about 2,000 accounts in Venezuela, most of which it claimed were “engaged in a state-backed influence campaign.” This comes amid accusations of a US-led coup attempt.

The San Francisco-based social media giant released a blog post on Thursday saying that it removed 1,196 accounts located in Venezuela which it deemed to “appear to be engaged in a state-backed influence campaign targeting domestic audiences.” It also removed another 764 accounts, however, noted: “We are unable to definitively tie the accounts located in Venezuela to information operations of a foreign government against another country.”

The Twitter purge of accounts was met with criticism and accusations of censorship.

Host of the Empire Files, a documentary & interview series, Abby Martin lamented that amid Twitter censorship of pro-government supporters, “pro-coup Venezuelans & right-wing exiles dominate the media sphere.”

Independent journalist Ben Norton accused social media corporations of acting as an “extension of US government interests.”

Republican Rep. Lee Zeldin of New York tweeted out an anti-Semitic voicemail left on his office phone Thursday afternoon. He tagged Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar in the tweet, as the two of them have recently fought over their views on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The caller said in part:

Everybody’s anti-Semitic when it comes to talking about you people who have murdered black people, systematically enslaved them. You’re occupying the Palestinian region. You’re worse than Hitler. Holocaust scholar: Respond to anti-semitism – even if you are accused of Islamophobia

During a lecture on Holocaust Memorial Day at Uppsala University, the American professor and historian Deborah Lipstadt talked about the difficult situation for Jews in Sweden.

This problem must be addressed – despite the risk of being called Islamophobic, she said.

Lipstadt is Professor of Modern Jewish History and Holocaust Studies at Emory University in Georgia, United States.

When asked about the situation for Jews in Sweden by newspaper Världen Idag, she described it as “difficult”.

According to her, it is not only among jihadists that Jewish hatred thrives. There are also problems among non-violent Muslims.

“There are certainly violent jihadists, but many Muslims who would never commit a violent crime, are also convinced that Jews are evil.”

“We find the violent ones and put them in prison, but we must also address these others,” she said.

Lipstadt thinks that the Swedes should put pressure on the authorities and demand that they do not ignore anti-Semitism. However, she understands that there is a fear of being called Islamophobic – a type of criticism that she herself has received.

“But we must call it, whenever we see it,” she says, pointing out that anti-Semitism begins with the Jews, but can then turn into hatred of other ethnic groups.

Moscow: Russian Hypersonic Weapons Eliminate Threat From US Exit From INF Treaty

On 4 December, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo gave Russia two months to "return to compliance" with the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty or Washington would leave the accord on February 2.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov stated Friday that Russia's military capabilities guarantee the country's security irrespective of the US moves on the INF Treaty.

"I think this [US withdrawing from the INF] is an inevitable prospect, and there will be no deviations from the path stated by President Trump and his national security assistant John Bolton when he was in Moscow. This game is played, the Americans will eventually reject the contract", he added.

Ryabkov also noted that Washington is moving towards a moratorium on all American obligations and expressed a fear that the new Strategic Arms Reduction (START) Treaty would meet the same fate as the INF agreement.

"We have not violated the treaty. We have repeatedly offered the United States to prove why the missile, which they use to incriminate us, does not violate the treaty. Nevertheless, they continue to stick to their position, arguing that it was Russia that violated the treaty, so that they had a reason to suspend it", the diplomat added.

On 26 December, the Kremlin stated that Russia's Defence Ministry had test-launched an Avangard hypersonic glide vehicle, which flies 27 times faster than the speed of sound and can carry megaton-class nuclear weapons. It was launched from the southern Ural Mountains and successfully hit a practice target on Kamchatka 6,000 kilometres (3,700 miles) away.
