I have been doing portraits for the better part of 20 years in my spare time and, on occasion professionally. I usually work with traditional mediums but recently have branched out into digital.
From my perspective, a portrait artist is better defined as a ‘cartographer of physiognomy.’ Whatever my place on “the spectrum” may be, drawing someone’s face has always helped me understand them on levels comparable to the myth of Pygmalion.
Having said that, whatever the fuck is displayed on the front of Mark Zuckerberg’s head in no way shape or form qualifies as a face. I had to muster all of my powers of pareidolia just to differentiate between light sources. It absorbs and diffuses all light. The CEO of facebook is a man with no face to speak of.
Then I tried to draw @Jack, and it’s like I’ve forgotten how to draw, or even see a face.
