The largest amount of federal mandates in U.S.schools is in "Special" Education, ever since PL94-142 signed by President Ford aka The Education for All Handicapped Children Act, which mandated "a free and appropriate education in the least restrictive environment" for ALL handicapped children ages 3-21. The law has been added to over the last 4-5 decades and what do you know? Special Education is now the LARGEST department in EVERY school district across the U.S., with rates of 12-20% of "special" students per school district. These "special students" included every one and his brother who have been diagnosed with ANY sort of the vague "conditions" whose numbers have also risen in sync: ADHD, non-specific learning disability, behaviorally disordered, emotionally maladjusted, etc and ad nauseum. If you want to know where your tax dollars are most wasted in education, look to SPECIAL ED. No, I'm not talking about the obviously special ed students โ€“ the autistic head bangers, the mentally retarded, the physically handicappedโ€“ I am talking about all the pseudo-psychological diagnoses that all too many parents are HAPPY to have their kid labeled because they THINK their kid is going to get extra help. What they don't realize is that as with any federal program, more time is spent documenting about their kid than helping their kid and of course there's a whole host of personnel that must complete the documentation yearly. By the time the kid is in high school, his folder is 6-8 inches thick. And he can't read any better than he did in fourth grade. And the teachers are so busy covering their asses with these "special" kids that they don't have the time to actually help them as per their INDIVIDUALIZED education plan. Educators know this. Politicians know this. But no body wants to say it, much less OWN it, because "muh special." /t

I have 26 years anecdotal sauce, with the licenses and degrees to make me an authority on the subject. But no, I am not going to dox myself. After retirement? You betcha. An expose' on the absurdities of American Public Education. Title: "Why Johny's Mom Doesn't Really Want Him to Learn to Read" Subtitle: "And Why the Government is All Too Happy to Comply."

But there's lots of data out there for taxpayers to connect the dots themselves in the meantime.

I'm fine with not being in notables. I didn't post that with the hope/intention of being notable. I simply wanted to rant from the perspective of an insider so that Anons might take a look at the Special Ed budgets in their own school districts. It's a travesty, really.

I'm sorry to hear of this, Anon. Unfortunately, it's all too common of a story with dyslexics, who need very specific one-on-one instruction in reading/writing, but NOT all day long. If I were you, I'd look up Orton-Gillingham methodology and work with him at home. Keep him out of the special classes if you can.
