If you want the general public to lose their apathy about the excessive NSA spying just remind them that if your Internet was 10x faster and moved 10x more data then the NSA would need 10x as much capacity to scan it. If everyone had gigabit fiber to them homes then total net traffic would be more than the NSA can handle. And then remind then that the telcos are in cahoots with the NSA. Internet speeds in the US are strangely slow compared to the rest of the developed world.

Likely conclusion, You are only allowed to have as much Internet as the NSA can filter. This is why your Internet service isn't 10x or 100x faster.
