Coulter: Mo Brooks a ‘terrific’ GOP challenger to Trump

Right-wing pundit Ann Coulter, fiercely critical of President Donald Trump for the lack of progress on his proposed border wall, said she thinks Alabama Rep. Mo Brooks could be a “terrific” challenger in the 2020 Republican primary.

Coulter tossed out that possibility during an interview on the Yahoo! News podcast "Skullduggery TV: Scandals in the Trump Era." In conversation with hosts Michael Isikoff and Daniel Klaidman, she referred to Trump as "lazy and incompetent" and said his promise of a southern border wall was what got him elected.

"We put this lunatic in the White House for one reason," she said.

Brooks' name came up in a brief exchange in which Klaidman jokingly hinted at a name-recognition problem for Brooks, R-Huntsville.

"Do you want a primary challenger to President Trump in 2020?" asked Isikoff. "A Republican primary challenger?"

"No," said Coulter. "I want him to build the wall, end anchor babies, deport dreamers …"

"If he does not?" pressed Isikoff.

"Um, I'm pretty sure there will be a primary challenger and it's not going to be Jeff Flake," she said, laughing at the thought of the former Arizona senator entering the race.

Daniel Klaidman, Isikoff asked who she'd pick if it came down to it. "Mo Brooks is terrific …," she said.

"Did you say Mel Brooks?" asked Klaidman.

"Mo Brooks," she said. "The one who should be the senator from Alabama instead of Doug Jones, but idiot Jared-boy said 'No, endorse Luther Strange, he's huge in Alabama! It'll be great!'"

"If the wall is not built," said Isikoff, "if we don't get it, would you support …"

"I can't even contemplate such a possibility," interjected Coulter.

“… a Republican, conservative, anti-immigrant primary challenger to Donald Trump,” continued Isikoff. “Yes or no?”

"I don't know, it's a hypothetical, I think he's going to build the wall," said Coulter. "I think there will be challengers if that happens, I think there will be tryouts, but I don’t know. Yeah, we'll see."

Klaidman asked what she foresaw if 2020 approached with Trump's promise broken.

"I'm not considering it broken yet, I 'm just reminding him that if he doesn't effin' build it, this will be a very big broken promise," she said. "Republican presidents have kind of a history of making big promises, getting elected on those promises, and then betraying their promise. And it doesn't end well."

A spokesman for Brooks said he had no comment on Coulter's remarks. Brooks definitely has used Coulter-style rhetoric on immigration, however. In early January he said Democratic leaders in Congress have "American blood" on their hands for crimes committed by illegal immigrants.

Brooks has been a staunch supporter of Trump border policies, however. In a separate statement, he said in January that “Until Congress gives President Trump funding for the physical border wall, his decision to send troops to the border, consistent with his Constitutional power as commander in chief, not only sends a strong message to the world that our borders will be secure, but more importantly preserves America’s national sovereignty.”

Immigration hasn’t been the only hot topic for Brooks. He recently issued a statement saying that Congressional Budget Office projections showed that “out of control Washington spending” had put the country on track for massive growth in national debt.

President Trump playing round with Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus at Trump National Jupiter

The highest profile round of the day is not happening on the European Tour nor the PGA Tour. It’s happening at Trump National Jupiter, where President Trump is playing with Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus.

Trump’s Jupiter course butts up next to Nicklaus’s “The Bear’s Club” — in fact, the two private clubs share the same driveway — so to see the two playing together is not wholly surprising. Woods is a Jupiter resident and has also played rounds with Trump in the past. Nicklaus and Woods are the two most prolific players in golf’s modern era, and have won 18 and 14 major championships, respectively.

Photos of the three on a putting green have made their way to social media, as well as videos of Woods hitting driver alongside Trump’s golf bag, Trump talking with Nicklaus and Trump hitting some irons on the range. The only questions that remain right now is who is the fourth, and what game are they playing?

Virginia governor refuses to resign over racist yearbook photo

The Virginia governor Ralph Northam has refused to resign, despite widespread calls for him to step down in response to the publication of a decades-old picture the Democrat admitted showed him dressed as either a member of the Ku Klux Klan or in blackface.

Northam said he would not resign on Saturday morning, according to the Virginia Democratic party. According to reports, Northam was questioning whether he was actually in the photo which, on Friday night, he said showed his younger self.

“We made the decision to let Governor Northam do the correct thing and resign this morning – we have gotten word he will not do so this morning,” said Susan Swecker, chair of the Democratic party of Virginia. “We stand with Democrats across Virginia and the country calling him to immediately resign.”

A press conference was scheduled for Saturday afternoon.

The photo was included on Northam’s 1984 yearbook page from Eastern Virginia Medical School and was made public on Friday. The Democratic governor publicly confirmed he was one of the two people in the photo, but did not identify which individual he was.

That certainty had apparently dissolved by Saturday, when Northam was reportedly making calls to obtain more information about the photo and casting doubts about whether either of the people in the black-and-white image was actually him.

The Virginia state senator Louise Lucas, a Democrat, told the Washington Post that Northam had called her on Saturday morning to say he didn’t think he was either of the people in the photo.

“He should have said that yesterday, then,” she said.

The New York Times also reported that Northam had been calling his former medical school classmates to obtain more information about the photo.

Northam was scheduled to make a statement at 2.30pm ET, just over 24 hours after the photo was made public.

Big League Politics, a website founded by former employees of the far-right Breitbart News, released the photo and a whirlwind of condemnations followed.

“I am deeply sorry for the decision I made to appear as I did in this photo and for the hurt that decision caused then and now,” Northam said.

The Virginia legislative black caucus (VLBC) urged Northam to resign, after meeting with him on Friday.

“We fully appreciate all that he has contributed to our Commonwealth,” the group said in a statement. “But given what was revealed today, it is clear that he can no longer effectively serve as Governor. It is time for him to resign, so that Virginia can begin the process of healing.”

Calls for his resignation also poured in from Virginia’s top Democrats and Republicans, as well as the Democratic presidential candidates Kamala Harris, Elizabeth Warren, Cory Booker, Kirsten Gillibrand and Julián Castro.

On Saturday morning, while a small group of protesters stood outside the Virginia governor’s mansion, Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders joined the chorus insisting on Northam’s resignation.

“There is no place for racism in America,” Biden tweeted.

The former vice-president then offered support for the lieutenant governor, Justin Fairfax, who is line to take the governorship if Northam resigns. Fairfax is the second black person to be elected to statewide office in Virginia and has not publicly commented on the photograph.

Biden said: “Governor Northam has lost all moral authority and should resign immediately, Justin Fairfax is the leader Virginia needs now.”
