I think it might have been a good guy sting (blackface photo), and with the MSM gun shy because of the layoffs the dems lost their covering fire. Northam may have figured out that the big guns are going after Pelosi, so if he bides his time the focus will shift to her. He decided to align with the anti-Pelosi forces.

I think Northam looked at the press coverage Cuomo got and figured he could ride Tran's bill to the national stage, so went all in. Same shit as the other woman who co-sponsored Tran's bill then fessed up she hadn't read it first. Northam doesn't seem to be as slick as Coumo and got in over his head when media questions started flying. Seems to have the Roy Moore syndrome of not being able to shake off character attacks. I read that his wife had to tell him at the presser that demonstrating the moonwalk wasn't a good idea atm. That would be an indication of the level he operates at off the cuff under stress.

The other thing that makes me wonder is that POTUS, when asked early on about the abortion statement, said, "I've met the guy, I'm surprised he said that in an interview." Puts the idea in motion that POTUS might actually think the guy is OK normally, and if he offers him some support (like giving him the skinny on what went down with the blackface pics, especially if dems themselves dropped it) he could recruit an ally against Pelosi.
