WILLIAMSPORT - The mother of an inmate who hanged himself in the old Northumberland County Prison in 2014 has settled her federal wrongful death suit for $300,000.

Hope Lewis, on behalf of the estate of her son Cyrus, accused the county and PrimeCare Medical Inc. of Harrisburg of ignoring his desire to commit suicide.

The $300,000 is split, with the county responsible for $187,500 and PrimeCare, the medical provider at the prison, $112,500. Insurance will cover the county's share, Commissioner Rich Shoch said.

The county was notified if it did not accept the insurance carrier's $300,000 settlement offer, it would be responsible for any amount awarded above that if the case went to trial, he said.

Lewis committed suicide June 15, 2014, five days after he failed to post $30,000 bail on charges that alleged he stole a vehicle while drunk and wrecked it.

He had told an officer that June 2 when charged but jailed he wanted to kill himself, court documents state.

In that incident he was accused of taking his wife's car without permission and while drunk crashing it into a tree.

Results of a behavioral health assessment conducted in prison resulted in Lewis being placed on the type of suicide watch that required checks every 15 minutes.

Mother: Nazi flag hanging in Frontier High School classroom

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — A mother is voicing her concern on Twitter after a Nazi flag appeared to be hanging in a Frontier High School classroom.

According to the tweet, the flag was hung in the classrom because "they're studying the Holocaust."

According to Erin Briscoe, the Public Information Officer for Kern High School District, the flag was brought back by the social studies teacher's World War II veteran relative. Briscoe says the flag brought in by the teacher as an authentic historical article from World War II.

Briscoe says the teacher has brought the flag to class in the past and it has never been an issue. The teacher had spoken to the Frontier High School principal before bringing in the flag and received permission.

Brisco also says the teacher said they meant no offense to anyone and wanted to show his class and authentic piece of history.

Briscoe told 23ABC that the flag has since been removed from the classroom.

Hundreds of Inmates Sick and 'Frantic' in Brooklyn Prison Without Heat in Extreme Cold

((Their Dope Sick))A Brooklyn jail that houses more than 1,500 inmates has had limited heat and hot water during some of the coldest weather of the year, and the jail’s warden refuses to admit it’s an issue, the New York Times reported on Friday.

The Metropolitan Detention Center sits in Brooklyn’s Sunset Park neighborhood, and like the rest of the Northeast, temperatures in the area have been brutally frigid this week. After a power outage and an electrical fire over the weekend, a stream of complaints and horror stories have come out of the federal prison. Per the Times:

Protests held outside NYC correctional facility with limited heat

A tense rally was held outside the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn Saturday following news reports that hundreds of inmates there have spent the past week largely without power or the ability to communicate with their attorneys or families. The federal Bureau of Prisons said Saturday that work to restore power to a detention center in New York City where inmates have gone without heat and electricity for a week will be completed by Monday.

A group at the rally vowed to camp outside the facility until conditions improve, CBS New York reports. Video posted to social media showed protesters shining flashlights on the dark correctional facility.

A congresswoman who visited the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn for the second time on Saturday said officials are not taking the situation seriously enough.

"The inmates are very, very angry and complaining," said Rep. Nydia Velazquez, a Democrat whose district includes the jail. "We expressed our frustration that the warden is not approaching this with a sense of urgency.

Velazquez first visited the jail Friday after seeing news reports that hundreds of inmates there have spent the past week largely without heat, power or the ability to communicate with their attorneys or families.

The commander of a US submarine was relieved of his duty after he admitted to naval authorities that he hired 10 prostitutes while docked in the Philippines, a Washington state newspaper reported this week.

Capt. Travis Zettel blabbed to two other sailors at a hotel pool in the Philippines that he hired nearly a dozen prostitutes on March 1, the Kitsap Sun reported, citing documents uncovered through a Freedom of Information Act request.

Later that night, a sailor saw Zettel with 10 “provocatively dressed females outside the front door of the hotel.”

Another sailor, whose name was not released in the documents, was also seen with three “local females holding onto his arm as he was wandering around.” He later denied being involved in prostitution and was not disciplined by the Navy.

Zettel was demoted as the skipper of the USS Bremerton last August after he “admitted culpability in the payment of female accompaniment” during an NCIS investigation, according to the report.

Armour told the court that he went to emergency counseling and is planning to enter a treatment program.

He also was sentenced to six months of probation and fined $1,000 with half the amount suspended.

These are very unhappy hookers.

Amsterdam’s working girls say crowds of selfie-snapping tourists have been horning in on their turf, mugging for photo-ops in front of their red light zone windows.

All those shutterbugs have driven off paying patrons and put the women at risk of unwanted social media exposure, according to a report.

“It’s the biggest free attraction park in the whole of Amsterdam,” says Frits Rouvoet, a bookstore owner in the district who’s friendly with the brothel brigade.

“If they want to make a living, they have to stand in the window but there are many, many men coming,” he told the BBC.

“From England, Scotland, Ireland. Drunk, screaming, trying to make pictures.”

Some prostitutes have put up signs in the their windows of a camera with a red line through it

The city’s first female mayor might have to butt in.

Femke Halsema is said to be laying out measures to help sex workers escape the snap-happy gawkers.
