WILLIAMSPORT - The mother of an inmate who hanged himself in the old Northumberland County Prison in 2014 has settled her federal wrongful death suit for $300,000.
Hope Lewis, on behalf of the estate of her son Cyrus, accused the county and PrimeCare Medical Inc. of Harrisburg of ignoring his desire to commit suicide.
The $300,000 is split, with the county responsible for $187,500 and PrimeCare, the medical provider at the prison, $112,500. Insurance will cover the county's share, Commissioner Rich Shoch said.
The county was notified if it did not accept the insurance carrier's $300,000 settlement offer, it would be responsible for any amount awarded above that if the case went to trial, he said.
Lewis committed suicide June 15, 2014, five days after he failed to post $30,000 bail on charges that alleged he stole a vehicle while drunk and wrecked it.
He had told an officer that June 2 when charged but jailed he wanted to kill himself, court documents state.
In that incident he was accused of taking his wife's car without permission and while drunk crashing it into a tree.
Results of a behavioral health assessment conducted in prison resulted in Lewis being placed on the type of suicide watch that required checks every 15 minutes.
