I'm not sure if white hats or black hats realeased the blackface pic, but I think the key element here is that the best case scenario for the dems is that Northam resigns and Fairfax moves in. They get the supposedly smooth-talking Fairfax in to drive their abortion bill and shake off the racism claim by promoting the black guy. Having Pelosi and others tell him publicly to resign, then having him say no doesn't fit.

So, why does he say it's me at night, then wake up the next day and say it's not me? It could be because he thought at first the pic they had was the MJ blackface imitation. Just a WAG here, but maybe the MJ imitation pic is harmless in the sense that he's in some kind of talent show and it's absolutely obvious he's not malicious. That is, the MJ pic has some exculpatory message.

Following, the gov then sees the college blackface pic is published and he realizes he's been set up by his own team. Good guys know what happens and they arrange for him to hang on until at least SOTU. He gets to be a punching bag, but it's better than resigning in disgrace as a racist. I think that having Pelosi and the team telling him to resign and he telling them all to go fuck themselves on live TV isn't the look the dems were expecting. You have to have a a lot of power behind you to do that.

Like I said, not sure here, but having Northam stay in as gov is best case scenario for pubs. They can hammer the abortion stuff, and he won't dare pull the abortion shit again. Otherwise, dems can gloat that they're for the black man, who will put abortion righ back on the table.
