The tail also landed two blocks away (short) of the primary crash site.

(Yorba Linda is my hometown so I know who to go to for the goods there.)
Pilot took off from Fullerton. Crash site is due east of there, just before the foothills really start. There's not much in the way of above ground high tension cables there and YL has an all below ground utilities zoning ordinance. I'd say large bird strike more likely.
