Dominic Lawson: The High Priests Of The Green Lobby

Oh look, another member of the great and the good is in the soup. And, not for the first time, it’s one of those who preaches to us about our duty to ‘save the planet’.

Yesterday, the Mail on Sunday revealed that a private company owned by Lord Deben (who, as John Selwyn Gummer, was Environment Secretary under John Major) had received more than £600,000 in undeclared payments from businesses which come under the purview of the Government’s Climate Change Committee (CCC), which he chairs.

The most significant payment came from the firm Johnson Matthey, which makes batteries for electric cars.

It paid Gummer’s company, Sancroft, almost £300,000 over five years — before he urged the Government to speed up plans to make all new cars on British roads battery-powered.

All MPs and Peers are required to declare any outside earnings and interests in order that the public (and fellow legislators) can determine if there is any conflict of interest.

This statistical analysis determined the 10 best generals of all time

Someone went and moneyball-ed military history. Ethan Arsht applied the principles of baseball sabermetrics to the performances of history's greatest generals' ability to win battles. It starts with comparing the number of wins from that general to a replacement general in the same circumstances.

The math is tricky but the list is definitive. There are just a few caveats.

First, where is all this information coming from? Although an imperfect source, Arsht complied Wikipedia data from 3,580 battles and 6,619 generals. He then compiled lists of key commanders, total forces, and of course, the outcome. The general's forces were categorized and his numerical advantage or disadvantage weighted to reflect tactical ability. The real power is ranking the general's WAR score, the aforementioned Wins Above Replacement.

Congress Has a Little Time to Get Immigration Right

After refusing for weeks to negotiate over border security “until the government is open,” the bluff has been called on congressional Democrats.

Congress has until February 15 to craft a border security package ahead of what could be yet another partial government shutdown. Talks among the 17 lawmakers appointed to the committee assigned with drafting a proposal have begun, though details remain scarce. Top Democrat Representative Nita Lowey (D-N.Y.) told reporters that “everything is on the table.” President Trump has said that the conference committee is wasting its time if it’s not considering a wall.

For those claiming that the recent 35-day shutdown resulted in no substantive achievement, the conference committee may well represent the one opportunity for substantive immigration reform from this Congress—and perhaps for the next decade. It is critically important that Congress get it right.

Fact Checking The Fact Checkers: Not Even Verification Team Has Faith In Facebook Fake News Finder

In light of scandals related to Facebook's supposed role in spreading mass misinformation during elections, the social media giant is partnering with fact-checkers to prevent "foreign interference" in democracies around the world. It's funny how quickly things can change. Remember when Donald Trump suggested that if he didn't win the election might have been rigged? Instantly CNN, President Obama, and others jumped in "debunking" his claim and assuring the public that the elections were inviolable. By December, however, the cries of "Russian propaganda" were everywhere. By December 15, 2016, Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg admitted the company needed help to stem the tide of "fake news" just a month after denying any blame for the spread of biased, unfactual, incorrect or outright fabricated news stories.
