It's due to inflation. When currency loses value, it triggers the public into buying things much quicker and buying stuff they don't need. If it's too fast, they stockpile creating shortages.
Wars cause high inflation. The rate was crazy high back in the 1970s when I was a kid. Nixon tried to control it thru wage controls. So, companies went around this by offering employees low-cost/free health insurance and other nice benefits. In the 1980s, Reagan admin played around with gov figures to hide the real inflation rate from the public. It's continued up thru today. This is why wages haven't kept up with the real cost of living and families needed two incomes to live middle class lifestyles w/o any gov assistance.
