Although I wasn't alive, judging by historical events, pop culture, manufacturing, judiciary, etc., I always peg the turning point at 1962 / 1963.
School prayer struck down in the Supreme Court, Kennedy shot, no more tail fins on cars, Viet Nam right around the corner, etc.
