Russia & Iran ditching dollar for trade in favor of national currencies – Moscow’s envoy to Tehran

Published time: 6 Feb, 2019 08:06

Moscow and Tehran have “essentially” turned away from the greenback in bilateral trade, and are using the ruble and rial for payments, the Russian ambassador to the Islamic Republic has revealed.

Turning to cross-currency trade was a “vital” issue for both Russia and Iran, and the two countries are planning to use “all available means” to boost these efforts, Levan Dzhagaryan said in an interview with TASS.

“We have already essentially dropped the dollar in cooperation with the Iranians, we will rely on the Russian ruble and the Iranian rial, [and] in case of urgent need, on the euro, if we have no other options,” the diplomat said. He added that banking structures in both countries have the potential to cope with this “difficult” task

Despite efforts by European countries to keep trading with the Islamic Republic after the US pulled out of the nuclear agreement, their efforts still do not fully address Tehran’s interests, Dzhagaryan believes.

The diplomat said that the payment system recently created by France, Germany and the UK to facilitate trade with Iran raises “more questions than it answers,” claiming that it does not change the state of affairs for Tehran.

He explained that the Instrument in Support of Trade Exchanges (INSTEX) covers only items not blacklisted by the US, but does not apply to vital sectors of trade for Iran.

“Oil is the most important [sector] for Iran. It is a huge question if Europe can allow the proper volume of oil exports and flow of revenue to the Iranian budget,” Dzhagaryan stated. “EU countries should show that they can carry independent foreign policy without fearing any warnings from overseas partners.”

Russia – along with several other countries, including India, China and Turkey – has been accelerating efforts to fight the dominance of the US currency in global trade amid rising tensions with Washington. Last year, Russian President Vladimir Putin called on the member states of the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) to create a common dollar-less payment system for “boosting economic sovereignty.” The bloc, which consists of Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan and Armenia, has free trade agreements with multiple partners across the globe, including Iran and China.

From zero to hero: How Venezuelan opposition leader Lopez made Juan Guaido the man of the day

Published time: 6 Feb, 2019 07:47

Juan Guiado may be a new name in the Venezuelan politics, but the man behind his rise from obscurity, controversial opposition politician Leopoldo Lopez, has been known and supported by the US and its allies for years.

Leopoldo Lopez, then mayor of Chacao Municipality in Caracas, took Guaido under his wing in 2009. They founded the Popular Will party, which explicitly opposed the government of Hugo Chavez. Lopez has been described as Guaido’s “mentor,” and guided him through his time as a lawmaker, helping him to avoid arrest for anti-government activities.

He still leads the party, but has been under arrest since massive anti-government protests in 2014, which ended in deadly clashes. He spent three years in prison before being transferred to house arrest in 2017.

Lopez has kept his finger on the pulse despite his detention, and reportedly held meetings and issued directions to opposition activists via Skype and encrypted messaging apps while Guaido rallied street protests in Caracas.

Leopoldo has been in prison for almost five years now, so communication with him is very difficult, we have to communicate with him through his family,” Juan Andres Mejia, congressman of the Popular Will party, told RT. “Basically, he gives the ideas, but decisions are being made by Juan and the rest of the Assembly,” he explained.

Lopez’s name appears in US diplomatic cables from 2009, which outline his strategy of running for public office and, potentially, for the presidency. However, US diplomats describe him as a “divisive figure” among the opposition, who is often “vindictive, and power-hungry.”

His wife, Lilian Tintori, has campaigned constantly for his freedom, and has met with US President Donald Trump and other political leaders. But Tintori found herself in the middle of a scandal in 2017 after police found a large amount of cash in her car, and she was later barred from leaving the country.

However, both Lopez and Tintori stay in regular contact with many officials and heads of states to ensure support for their protege, according to media reports.

THIS WAS ON OF THE 'OH NO NOT HIM?!?!?

Officials are probing a report that disgraced entertainer Rolf Harris walked onto the grounds of a primary school and waved at pupils.

The convicted sex offender went onto the premises of Oldfield Primary School near his home in Bray, Maidenhead, to talk to a sculptor working in the grounds, the Daily Mirror reported.

Harris, who was jailed for five years and nine months in 2014 but released on licence in May 2017, was then told to leave by the school’s head teacher.

A Ministry of Justice spokeswoman said: “When sex offenders are released they are subject to strict licence conditions and are liable to be returned to custody for breaching them.

“We are looking into these reports and will take appropriate action.”

I went over and shook his hand and introduced myself. He explained what he was doing – that he was getting some wood from the sculptor. I said, ‘You need to go’

Thames Valley Police (TVP) said an officer attended the scene and established that no offence had been committed.

Head teacher Richard Jarrett told the paper that the school has “two forms of security” and Harris had no access to the pupils “whatsoever”.

He told the paper: “We’ve got a wood sculptor working close to the road at the moment and Rolf Harris lives about three doors down from the school.

“He must have seen him (the sculptor) and come into the school area. He had no access to the children whatsoever.

“I went over and shook his hand and introduced myself. He explained what he was doing – that he was getting some wood from the sculptor. I said, ‘You need to go’.”

TVP said it was called to Oldfield Primary School at around 3.15pm on Tuesday.

The force added: “A report was made that a man was on the site of the school. An officer attended the scene but no offence was committed. No arrests were made.”

Harris, a family favourite for decades, was convicted of 12 indecent assaults at London’s Southwark Crown Court in June 2014, including one on an eight-year-old autograph hunter, two on girls in their early teens, and a catalogue of abuse against his daughter’s friend over 16 years.

They took place between 1968 and 1986.

In May 2017 he was formally cleared of four unconnected historical sex offences, which he had denied. Later the same year, one of the 12 indecent assault convictions was overturned by the Court of Appeal.

Interserve - one of the UK's largest providers of public services - has reached a deal with creditors to prevent its collapse.

The rescue plan involves cutting its debts from over >£600m to £275m by issuing new shares.

Chief executive Debbie White said it was "a significant step forward in our plans to strengthen the balance sheet".

Interserve sells services, including probation, cleaning and healthcare, and is involved in construction projects.

"The board believes that this agreement will secure a strong future for Interserve," Ms White added.

The firm plans to issue £480m worth of new shares, which will be swapped with creditors for debt, leaving existing shareholders with virtually nothing.

Under the rescue deal, Interserve will also keep its most profitable division, its RMD Kwikform construction business, loading £350m of debt onto its balance sheet.

The firm had considered spinning the unit off to its lenders to raise money.

Second rescue deal

This is the second rescue deal for Interserve, with the company refinancing its debt in March last year.

Its troubles have been blamed on cancellations and delays in its construction contracts as well as struggling waste-to-energy projects in Derby and Glasgow.

The firm's shares have plunged over the past year, currently trading at around 13p each. Just over a year ago, the shares were worth 100p each.

Interserve's difficulties follow the collapse of Carillion in January 2018, which put thousands of jobs at risk and cost taxpayers £148m.

Government reassures over Interserve

Following that, the government launched a pilot of "living wills" for contractors, so that critical services can be taken over in the event of a crisis. Interserve is one of five suppliers taking part.

In a separate statement, shareholder Coltrane Master Fund, which holds over a 5% stake in Interserve, has asked the firm to remove eight directors.

It requested two other individuals be appointed as directors, but reiterated its support for Ms White as chief executive of the outsourcing provider.

What does Interserve do?

From its origins in dredging and construction, the company has diversified into wide range of services, such as health care and catering, for clients in government and industry.

At King George Hospital in east London, for instance, Interserve has a £35m contract for cleaning, security, meals, waste management and maintenance.

Its infrastructure projects include improving the M5 Junction 6 near Worcester, refurbishing the Rotherham Interchange bus station in Yorkshire, and upgrading sewers and water pipes for Northumbrian Water.

But Interserve is also the largest provider of probation services in England and Wales, supervising about 40,000 "medium-low risk offenders" for the Ministry of Justice.
