In late 1524 a zealous protestant preacher named Thomas Muntzer founded ‘The Eternal League of God.’ The banner of this peasant militia was white flag emblazoned with both a rainbow and the slogan God‘s Word will endure forever. But at Frankenhausen, on the May 11, 1525, Muntzer and his men were slaughtered by an army of well-equipped landsknecht mercenaries who’d been hired by the nobles to crush the revolt. Muntzer was captured, tortured and beheaded. The landsknechts lost just four men killed and two wounded.

Though Goetz von Berlichingen, Florian Geyer and Thomas Muntzer were soundly beaten on the battlefield, these rebel leaders have become popular folk heroes. Both Goetz and Geyer have had numerous plays and songs written about them. Both enjoy the dubious distinction of having Nazi SS Panzer divisions named in their honour, while Muntzer was lionized by the East German Communist Party. In fact, the rulers of the former DDR commissioned a giant 360o mural to commemorate the Battle of Frankenhausen. The memorial was officially opened on Sept. 14, 1989 — just eight weeks before the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of communism.

Ignited in 1524, the Peasants' War spread across the Germanic regions of the Holy Roman Empire during 1525 until its suppression in 1526. Many factors, including changes in social and economic structures, played a role in inciting the peasants to revolt. The move from an entirely agrarian economic base during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries served as a backdrop to the development of new social classes, ones that could not and did not coincide with the traditional feudal hierarchy. Although initially the grievances cited by the peasants were essentially based on individual abuses on the part of government of the Church, this shifted as time went on, and would come to encompass these minor issues within a general dissatisfaction for the entire feudal order.

In 2012, Yael Bartana exhibited her video trilogy …and Europe will be stunned at the Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art. The trilogy included the films Mary Koszmary (Nightmares) (2007) and Mur I Wieza (Wall and Tower) (2009), as well as a third and final part, Zamach (Assassination) (2011). This trilogy marks Bartana’s most ambitious project to date in which she brings to life an imagined narrative of history through a call for the Jews to return to Poland and the subsequent Jewish renaissance in Poland.

The 7th Berlin Biennale addressed the question of how art can allow citizens to influence reality and foster critical attitudes in society. Both the activists from movements as well as the participating artists tried to position themselves in relation to concrete political and social concerns in order to contribute to the situating of art within the field of contemporary politics.
