‘Read the Constitution,’ US Senators told after pro-Israel move

US senators in favor of a pro-Israel bill passed in the upper chamber of US Congress are urged to “read the Constitution.”

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) denounced the Senate’s Tuesday vote to pass legislation in an attempt to stop contracts with supporters of Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement.

“Today, the Senate chose politics over the Constitution and trampled on the First Amendment rights of all Americans,” said the rights group.

The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) rushed to applaud the pro-Israel measure. “This legislation mirrors a provision in current federal law that protects states directing divestment from companies invested in Iran’s energy sector,” AIPAC claimed, adding that “the legislation has no impact on the right of Americans to personally boycott Israel or oppose Israeli policies.”

Seventy-seven senators voted in favor of the move and 23 voted against it.

Most of the Democratic Party members of the Senate also threw their support behind the measure, while only one Republican, Kentucky Senator Rand Paul, voted against the legislation along with nearly half of the Democrats.

“We thank each senator who defended the First Amendment and voted against the Combating BDS Act,” the ACLU said. “Senators who voted for the bill: we encourage you to read the Constitution, which protects against the McCarthy-era tactics this bill endorses.”

The pro-Israel measure is expected to fail once it reaches the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives.

The BDS is gaining momentum in the United States and poses a serious threat to Israel’s “hegemonic power” in Washington, according to Myles Hoenig, a political activist based in the US state of Maryland.

The movement was initiated in 2005 by over 170 Palestinian organizations to initiate “various forms of boycott against Israel until it meets its obligations under international law.”

U.S. Asks More Countries To Occupy Northeast Syria

Monday's piece about the situation in Syria included a judgment that now seems to be wrong.

The Trump administration planned to replace U.S. troops in northeast Syria with those of various allies.

James Jeffrey, the neoconservative U.S. special envoy to the anti-ISIS coalition, thought up an elaborate scheme to 'protect the Kurds' and to secure the borders to Turkey with the help of allied troops.

The Jeffrey plan being carried to Ankara/Rojava is very complex, requires open-ended commitments from UK-France, Turkish patrols in rural areas, SDF acquiescence, 3rd party forces, and US top cover, perhaps including a US enforced NFZ (unclear if POTUS is on board with this bit)

A week later the Wall Street Journal reported that the crazy scheme failed to win support from any of the relevant parties. The Kurds rejected it and Britain and France declined to send troops on a never ending mission between the waring Turkish and Kurdish sides.

The assertions that the scheme failed may have been premature. There are signs that it is still been worked on.

Today Secretary of State Mike Pompeo talked to foreign ministers and officials of the U.S. coalition against ISIS. He made a remark that seems to announce a request to these allies to send their troops to replace the U.S. forces in northeast Syria:

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Wednesday reassured allies that the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Syria was not “the end of America’s fight” and called on them to recommit to permanently defeating Islamic State in Syria and Iraq.

“Our mission is unwavering, but we need your help to accomplish it, just as we’ve had over the past months and years,” Pompeo said, “To that end, we ask that our coalition partners seriously and rapidly consider requests that will enable our efforts to continue.

“Those requests are likely to come very soon,” he added, without elaborating.

Pompeo also wants (vid) the coalition to "removal of all Iranian led forces from Syria." He also asked for hundreds of millions fro Iraq.

One of the participants of the meeting was the German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas, a rather daft member of the formerly social democratic party. As he traveled to Washington DC he lamented (in German) about a "vacuum" that would be created when the U.S. troops withdraw (my translation):

Before his flight to Washington Foreign Minister Heiko Maas (SPD) said: "In Syria we still have no clarity how a vacuum can be avoided after the announced U.S. troop draw-down, so that no new escalation of old conflicts and a resurgence of the Islamic State can happen." He hoped to receive more information on the issue during the talks in Washington. The danger from the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq "is by far not over."

How come these politicians never learned physics? Northeast Syria is not closed off from the atmosphere or the surrounding lands. That makes a vacuum there impossible.

Foreign Terrorists Publicly Vow To Support Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham

Foreign terrorists in Syria reaffirmed their support to Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) [the former branch of al-Qaeda in Syria] in a joint statement released on February 6.

“Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham, represented by its leadership and fighters, is the dignity of Ahl al-Sunnah [followers of the Sunni sect] in Bilad al-Sham [the Levant] … We stand united with it,” the statement reads.

The statement was signed by the leaders of several terrorist groups, including Abu Omar al-Turkstani, leader of the Turkistan Islamic Party (TIP), Abu Salah al-Uzbaki, leader of the al-Tawhid and al-Jihad Brigade, and Abu Mohamad al-Daghstani, leader of Jaish al-Muhajireen wal-Ansar.

The agreement strengthens HTS’ positions as the main supporter of foreign terrorists in Syria, especially that it comes after the group’s recent disrepute with al-Qaeda-affiliated Horas al-Din. The two groups reportedly reached a 10-point reconciliation agreement last week.

Israeli Military Responds to Rocket Fired Into Southern Israel From Gaza

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement on Wednesday that a rocket was launched from the Gaza Strip into Israel.

"A rocket was launched from #Gaza at Israel. In response, an IDF tank struck a Hamas military post in southern Gaza," the IDF tweeted.

According to the preliminary data, the attack did not result in any victims or material damage.

The Gaza border area has been a scene of violent clashes between Palestinians and the Israeli military since late March, when Palestinians launched their anti-Israeli campaign dubbed the Great March of Return.
