First of its kind drug bust: 60kg cocaine paste worth €11 million seized at Freeport

Customs said the drugs were found in a container travelling from South America to the Middle East

Customs officials have seized a shipment of cocaine estimated to be worth €11 million at the Malta Freeport in an operation described as being unique and intricate.

In a statement, the department said that on late on Monday afternoon, officials stationed at the Container Monitoring Unit “flagged a container for a thorough examination due to its suspicious route”.

The 20’ container, customs said, left a South American country and stopped in Malta on its way to the Middle East. The container was declared to have been carrying 532 drums of water-proofing compound, customs said, adding that irregularities were then noticed once the container was scanned.

Police constable arrested for cocaine possession in Gozo

The police officer, 21, was caught with six cocaine sachets during a football match at Gozo stadium

A young police constable has been arrested after he was caught in possession of cocaine.

The officer, 21, who was stationed at Qawra police station, was arrested on Sunday at the Gozo stadium, as he was attending a football match between Xewkija Tigers and Nadur Youngsters.

According to media reports, the man had been off-duty at the time. He was apprehended after having been followed by police officers as he entered the stadium’s toilets. Six sachets containing cocaine were found on his person.

It is understood that he initially resisted the arrest, claiming that, as a police officer himself, he couldn’t be arrested by his colleagues.

House intelligence committee will send Russia testimony to Mueller

"It's called presidential harassment," President Donald Trump said Wednesday of the ongoing Russia probe.

Feb. 6 (UPI) – The House intelligence committee voted in a closed hearing Wednesday to send testimony concerning the Russia inquiry to special counsel Robert Mueller, which could result in perjury charges.

The Democratic-controlled panel met Wednesday afternoon and approved sending the transcripts for the Justice Department probe. The records they approved to be sent to Mueller's office involve committee testimony from about 50 interviews in the case.

European leader says there's a 'place in hell' for no-plan Brexit backers

Feb. 6 (UPI) – European Council President Donald Tusk drew ire from Brexit supporters Wednesday by suggesting there was a "special place in hell" for those driving Britain's departure from the European Union without a plan.

Tusk made the comments after meeting with Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar in Brussels. Britain is expected to leave the European Union next month and is currently has no signed exit plan. That has shaken many businesses, including those who are threatening to leave Britain or already have because of the uncertainty.

"By the way, I've been wondering what that special place in hell looks like, for those who promoted Brexit, without even a sketch of a plan how to carry it out safely," Tusk said in his statement.

France's finances hit hard by Macron's €10 billion 'yellow vest' concessions

The 10-billion-euro ($11.4 billion) package of measures for low earners announced by President Emmanuel Macron to try end the "yellow vest" revolt has "weakened" France's finances, state auditors warned on Wednesday.

"The outlook for the public finances in 2019 is particularly risky," said the Cour des Comptes, France's independent state audit office, calling on Macron's centrist government to take corrective measures.

Three weeks after protesters began occupying traffic roundabouts and staging mass rallies over spending power, a beleaguered Macron went on national television in mid-December to announce a package of wage increases and tax cuts for low earners and retirees.

The concessions threw the government's deficit reduction drive off course.
