Woman arrested after accidentally crossing U.S. border from Canada during jog

The U.S. zero tolerance policy has drawn the world’s attention to the southern border… but the policy also appears to be in effect at the northern border with Canada.

A French woman visiting her mother in Canada was arrested last month after she accidentally crossed the U.S. border from Canada.

The 19-year-old was jogging on a beach in British Columbia when she says she had accidentally crossed into the state of Washington.

She was stopped by two U.S. Border Patrol officers who she says told her she had crossed illegally. She was arrested and held at an immigrant detention center in Tacoma, Wash., for two weeks.

The girl’s mother said her daughter’s arrest was unfair because she says there were no signs warning people of the international border.

Jobless Claims Fall to 234,000 as Shutdown Boost Rolls Off

The number of Americans filing applications for jobless benefits fell last week but remained well-above the near 50 year lows seen at the end of last year and the start of 2019.

Initial claims for state unemployment benefits decreased 19,000 to a seasonally adjusted 234,000 for the week ended February 2, the Labor Department said on Thursday. Data for the prior week was unrevised at 253,000.

Economists polled by Reuters had forecast claims falling by even more, to 222,000 in the latest week

Moon, Xi may join Trump, Kim to declare end to war

President Moon Jae-in and Chinese President Xi Jinping may join the summit to be held between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un this month in Vietnam to declare an end to the Korean War.

As U.S. Special Representative for North Korea Stephen Biegun stated last week, President Trump is open to formally ending the war as part of measures to spur denuclearization talks with North Korea. This is an idea Moon, Xi and Kim have all been supporting.

One major obstacle was North Korea's opposition to the continued presence of U.S. troops in South Korea. However, the North has reportedly changed its stance on this.

U.S. and South Korean officials said ending the Korean War is a major topic in the ongoing pre-summit talks in Pyongyang.

Top Russian diplomat meets Taliban, encourages US withdrawal

A top Russian diplomat has met with Taliban representatives and expressed Moscow’s support for the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan.

The meeting came after two days of talks between prominent Afghan figures and Taliban representatives in Moscow. A senior Taliban official said Wednesday that the United States has promised to withdraw half of its troops from Afghanistan by the end of April, but the U.S. military did not confirm it.

Zamir Kabulovm, the Russian presidential envoy on Afghanistan, told the RIA Novosti news agency Thursday that Russia is willing to help talks between the U.S. and the Taliban on the withdrawal of U.S. troops. Kabulov also said that Moscow would be willing to support lifting sanctions from the Taliban as long as other U.N. Security Council members are also on board.

The development is significant because it signals that a preliminary investigation conducted by the Oran diocese and sent to the Vatican was deemed credible to warrant further investigation by an outside party.
