Agreement between the Vatican and Beijing has not stopped repression of Catholic priests, followers

The provisional agreement on the selection of Chinese bishops, which the Vatican and China signed last September does not appear to be producing the results expected by the Pope and the Roman Church.

Cardinal Fernando Filoni, prefect of the Holy See’s Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, which is responsible for missionary activities, claimed on Saturday that the Sino-Vatican arrangement was of historical significance, but he admitted that he looked at the deal with some perplexity, just like many Chinese Catholics.

Recent events have indeed shown that the agreement’s conclusion has not stopped the Chinese government’s repression of Catholic prelates, priests and followers.

Rouhani: Iran ready to accept friendly US ties if it ‘repents’

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said Wednesday his country would be ready to establish “friendly relations” with the United States if it apologized for past wrongs.

“Our slogan is friendly relations with the whole world,” he said. That would even include “America, if it repents… and apologizes for its previous interferences in Iran, and is prepared to accept the greatness and dignity of the nation of Iran and the great Islamic Revolution,” he said.

“We are still ready to accept America’s… repentance despite the fact that for years it has done injustice to us,” he told foreign diplomats in Tehran during a ceremony to mark the 40th anniversary of Iran’s Islamic Revolution.

Robot run over by self-driving Tesla on way to CES in Las Vegas

A humanoid robot on its way to the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas has been "hit and destroyed" by a self-driving Tesla.

The $2,000 per day rentable model V4 robot, from manufacturer Promobot, was hit by a Tesla Model S vehicle on Paradise Road in Las Vegas, as it made its way to the Congress Hall exhibition centre with a fleet of other robots.

At the time of the accident, on Sunday 6 January, the group of identical robots were travelling in a line accompanied by the company's engineers.

Army responds to terrorists’ attacks on safe areas in Hama countryside

Hama, SANA – Army units on Thursday destroyed terrorist groups’ positions and dens in the direction of Latamina, in response to their shelling attacks on Mharda city in Hama northern countryside, SANA reporter said.

Material damage was caused to properties when the terrorist groups fired two rocket shells on the residential neighborhoods in Mharda city.

In the northern countryside of Hama, army units responded to terrorists’ attacks and violation of the de-escalation zone agreement by intensively targeting their dens near Kafrzita, al-Sayyad and Hesraya , killing and injuring scores of them, the reporter said.

Trump Pick Would Commit World Bank to Reforms, May Cut Off China

David Malpass, President Donald Trump’s nominee for the position of World Bank president, said he intends to implement reforms that he helped convince the international institution to accept.

Trump announced Malpass’s nomination on Feb. 6, calling him “the right person to take this incredibly important job.”

Currently the Treasury’s undersecretary for international finance, Malpass is responsible for maintaining relations with nearly 100 international organizations and working groups.

Together with Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, Malpass made it his priority to get the World Bank to accept a number of reforms, including an increased focus on helping poorer countries and reducing lending to richer countries. The Trump administration also has secured a $13 billion funding increase for the bank.

Airman stationed at Eielson Air Force Base found dead in Alaska

An airman was found dead in a parking lot in North Pole, Alaska, Eielson Air Force Base officials said Tuesday.

Senior Airman Elijah Evans, 23, was found dead on Monday, according to an Air Force statement, though where he was found is unclear. The Air Force said it was a restaurant parking lot, while North Pole police quoted by KTVF News of Fairbanks said he was found at the Gorilla Fireworks parking lot.

Senate Intel Chairman: ‘We Don’t Have Anything That Would Suggest There Was Collusion’

After more than two years of investigation, the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence has not found evidence of collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russian government, the committee’s Republican chairman said in interview.
