Similarities between NXIVM (Keith Raniere) and El Chapo. Are there connections?

o Both were heads of criminal organizations with ties to well-known celebrities and public figures.

o Both had major portions of their operations in Mexico, and had built extensive networks to distribute their illegal products throughout the US.

o Both were arrested in Mexico, hiding from authorities with the help of their criminal networks and likely with the help of compromised authorities.

o Both cases involve sex slavery. El Chapo’s case include testimony from witnesses that he would drug and have sex with minors he called 'vitamins.'

o Both arrests were made largely using IT information – Prosecutors say they caught El Chapo on tape between 100 and 200 times, and wiretapped 800 calls after his IT guy, Cristian Rodriguez, helped them decode its encrypted computer system. In Raniere’s case the prosecution is using over 12 terabytes of evidence, including videos, from 80 electronic devices that were seized from the home of Raniere’s alleged co-conspirator Nancy Salzman.

o Both trials were delayed due to “mountains of evidence” being brought by the prosecutors.

o Both are currently being held in the same prison, Brooklyn Metro Detention Center, and are being tried in Brooklyn.

o If Guzman is convicted [which is likely], prosecutors will try to seize $14 billion of his alleged profits from his sale of drugs. If NXIVM benefactor, Claire Bronfman, is convicted it could include potential seizure of $100 million or so of Bronfman money.
