In the ancient Greek and Roman Theatre, the actors wore masks that reflected the nature of the characters, not "joy and tragedy." There masks of cranky old men in comedies and comedic masks for characters in tragedies, such as the Corinthian Messenger in Oedipus the King. So to be clear, the comic and tragic symbolic masks that represent the theatre were never worn per se on stage.
