Former Fox News reporter joining State to lead effort to counter foreign propaganda
A former reporter at Fox News is moving to the State Department to lead its counterpropaganda efforts around the globe.
Lea Gabrielle, a former U.S. Navy fighter pilot who worked at Fox News until last year and previously was at NBC News, will head the Global Engagement Center (GEC).
The center works to counter messaging from terrorist groups and also deals with disinformation and propaganda from foreign sources.
Gabrielle confirmed her post to Foreign Policy, stating that foreign governments and terrorist organizations were actively using propaganda and "disinformation" against the U.S.
“We have to realize that we are under attack by adversary countries and international terrorist organizations that are using propaganda and disinformation as a weapon,” she told the magazine. “They’re doing it because it’s cheap, and it’s easy, and because they can.”
She reportedly told Foreign Policy that China, Russia and Iran represent the top propaganda sources which her office will confront.
