“Map of Deadbeat Debtors”: China Launches New App That Turns Citizens Into Snitches

Officials in China have launched a new app that notifies users if someone within 500 yards of them is in debt.

Dubbed the “Map of Deadbeat Debtors,” the app was launched in Northern China after the Higher People’s Court of Hebei developed it as a means to name and shame debtors, according to China Daily.

Users of the app will be alerted if they are in close proximity to debt and will also be able to tap avatars on a map to access to the name, national identification number and reason why the “deadbeat” made the list.

US assails Iranian space program after reports of second failed launch

The United States has again accused Iran of developing and testing ballistic missiles in “defiance of the international community” after reports of a second failed space launch by Tehran in less than a month.

In a statement late on February 7, the State Department asserted that space launch vehicles “use technologies that are virtually identical and interchangeable with those used in ballistic missiles, including in Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBMs).”

The attempted launch earlier on February 7 “furthers Iran’s ability to eventually build such a weapon that threatens our allies,” it added.

Two satellite imagery companies released photos that suggested Iran had attempted a second launch of a satellite after the failure of another lift-off in January.

Skipping Court

U.S. Immigration Courts & Aliens Who Disappear Before Trial

U.S. immigration courts recently released their numbers to Congress for fiscal year 2017. Hoped-for improvements are largely absent and problems that have defined the courts since their beginning persist. Most persistent of all is the failure of aliens to appear for their trials. These no-shows remain high, with 43 percent of all those free before trial — 41,302 aliens out of 95,342 — disappearing from court in 2017.1 More to the point, these numbers add up.

EU backs Iran trading system, blasts Tehran’s ‘destabilizing, hostile’ activities

The European Union has welcomed a new mechanism to trade with Iran while bypassing U.S. sanctions, but criticized Tehran over its “destabilizing” ballistic missile program, its “hostile activities” on the territories of several EU member states, and its meddling in countries in the Middle East.

In a joint statement unanimously adopted by the bloc’s ambassadors on February 4 following more than a week of wrangling in Brussels, the EU restated its commitment to saving the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers.

The statement hailed the launch last week by France, Britain, and Germany of a financial mechanism to allow firms to trade with Iran without falling foul of U.S. sanctions as key to supporting “legitimate trade” with Iran.

It said the system aimed to provide “a positive impact on trade and economic relations with Iran, but most importantly on the lives of Iranian people.”

Air Force general apologizes for wearing upside down ribbon rack at State of the Union

Four-star Air Force Gen. Joseph Lengyel took to social media to apologize for a uniform gaffe committed while attending President Donald Trump’s annual address before Congress on Tuesday night.

“A not-so-funny thing happened on the way to the State of the Union last night,” Lengyel, who serves as chief of the National Guard Bureau, wrote Wednesday on his official Facebook page. “If you look closely, you’ll see that the ribbons on my uniform jacket are upside down.”

The mistake, in which Lengyel wore his highest-precedence awards on the bottom row instead of the top, had already been spotted by eagle-eyed viewers after he was briefly shown during the televised address.

“I missed it … plain and simple,” he said in his Facebook post. “I hope this is a lesson for everyone who wears the uniform, and really for anyone. They put erasers on pencils for a reason. When you make a mistake or miss a detail, own it and move on.”

Justice Department probing how it handled serial pedophile Jeffrey Epstein

The Justice Department has opened an investigation into its own possible misconduct in the wrist-slap prosecution of multimillionaire serial pedophile Jeffrey Epstein.

The investigation is being conducted by the department’s Office of Professional Responsibility, according to MSNBC.

“OPR has now opened an investigation into allegations that Department attorneys may have committed professional misconduct in the manner in which the Epstein criminal matter was resolved,” Assistant Attorney General Stephen E. Boyd said in a Feb. 6 letter to Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.).
