White House Warns Of Another Shutdown As Negotiations Near End

White House deputy press secretary Hogan Gidley warned of a possible government shutdown if Congress does not deliver funding for a border wall, in a Friday morning gaggle with reporters at the White House.

“We’re on the verge of a government shutdown again because Democrats won’t come to the table to have a conversation about securing the country,” Gidley warned as a Feb. 15 deadline for Congressional negotiations comes to a close.

Pennsylvania College Paper Runs Racist Op-Ed Saying White Boys Shouldn’t Be Allowed to Speak During Class

The incredibly racist article says “should white boys still be allowed to share their “opinions”? Should we be forced to listen? In honor of Black History Month, I’m gonna go with a hell no.

Titled “Should White Boys Still Be Allowed to Talk?” by a student named Leda Fisher, who happens to be a “Goodwill Ambassador” at the school. The article claims that “American society tells men, but especially white men, that their opinions have merit and that their voice is valuable, but after four years of listening to white boys in college, I am not so convinced.”

“In my time at Dickinson I have listened to probably hundreds of white boys talk. It feels incessant. From classes and lectures, to the news and politics, there is an endless line of white boys waiting to share their opinions on the state of feminism in America, whether the LGBTQ+ population finally has enough rights, the merits of capitalism, etc. The list of what white boys think they are qualified to talk about is endless,” the article continues.

‘Death to America’ aimed at Trump, not Americans, Iran’s leader says

Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has said the slogan “Death to America” is directed at U.S. President Donald Trump and other U.S. decision-makers, not the American nation.

“‘Death to America’ means death to Trump, [national security adviser] John Bolton, and [Secretary of State Mike] Pompeo. It means death to American rulers,” Khamenei said in a February 8 speech to a gathering of Iranian Army Air Force officers marking the 40th anniversary of the 1979 revolution.

The slogan is regularly chanted at state-organized rallies and events, including Friday Prayers.

“It means death to the few people running that country. We have nothing against the American nation,” Khamenei added, according to his official website.

Changes coming for US lawmakers who call Capitol home

CAPITOL HILL — The U.S. Capitol is the most recognizable workplace in the country, and for an estimated 80 to 100 lawmakers, it’s also the place they literally call home while in Washington, D.C.

For three to four nights each week — 30 to 40 weeks a year — these lawmakers don’t leave Capitol Hill at the end of a long day of legislating. Instead, a couch in an office or sometimes even a mattress in a closet serves as their bedrooms. Many wake up and go through the morning routine of dressing and freshening up, even as some of their staff members may be arriving to get an early start on work for the day.

The long-term practice has saved scores of penny-pinching lawmakers the cost of renting an apartment or a house while Congress is in session, but it has mostly benefited men who don’t mind padding around their offices in their pajamas or underwear.

But it’s a practice the new House Democratic majority wants to end in the #MeToo era, as awareness of the need for protecting women against sexual harassment increases on Capitol Hill.

A Taser factory in Arizona is the epicenter of the robot revolution, and its success is foreshadowing the rise of a $370 billion industry

Ten years ago, Axon started using robots to assemble cartridges for its flagship product, the Taser. Automation helped the Arizona-based giant bring production back into the US and boosted its output by four times.

The big picture:This is why factory automation is predicted to be worth nearly $370 billion worldwide by 2025, up from $191 billion in 2017. Robots build quickly and cheaply, and they don't make mistakes or get tired.

US Senate Takes Aim at OPEC, but Will It Follow Through

On Thursday, a bipartisan group of four U.S. Senators introduced legislation titled the No Oil Producing and Exporting Cartels Act (NOPEC) that would give the U.S. Department of Justice authority to sue members of the Organization of the Oil Exporting Countries (OPEC) for antitrust violations. Similar legislation was passed out of committee in the House of Representatives Thursday and now needs approval by the full House.

The four Senators were Republicans Chuck Grassley of Iowa and Mike Lee of Utah, along with Democrats Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota and Patrick Leahy of Vermont. Missing from the group were any Senators from big oil-producing states like Texas, North Dakota and Louisiana.

Perhaps that’s because the oil patch is not well-pleased with the NOPEC legislation. Earlier in the week, American Petroleum Institute CEO Mike Sommers sent a letter to Senate and House leaders of their respective Judiciary Committees pointing out why the legislation “threatens serious, unintended consequences for the U.S. natural gas and oil industry.”

Global Demand for Jet Fuel to Jump 27% by 2040

Worldwide demand for jet fuel currently stands at about 7.45 million barrels a day. By 2040 that total will rise by more than 27% to more than 9.5 million barrels a day, driven by demand from Asia and a booming market for freight carriers.

That’s the assessment in a new report from analytics firm IHS Markit released Tuesday. Citing data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the firm noted that the IATA expects passenger traffic to increase by 7.0% year over year in 2018, following increases of 7.4% in 2016 and 8.1% in 2017. Demand from freight carriers is forecast to rise by 4.0% this year, following a blistering gain of 9.7% in 2017 and a more modest gain of 3.6% in 2016.
