Cory Booker compares 'Green New Deal' to moon landing and fighting Nazis
Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., compared the Green New Deal resolution introduced by House Democrats to the American landing on the moon and the fight against Nazi Germany. Booker, who is running for president in 2020, was speaking at a campaign event Friday in Mason City, Iowa.
“Our planet is in peril, and we need to be bold,” he said. “There’s a lot of people blowing back on the Green New Deal. They’re going, ‘Oh, it’s impractical, oh it’s too expensive, oh it’s all of this.’ If we used to govern our dreams that way, we would have never gone to the moon.” “When the planet has been in peril in the past, who came forward to save the Earth from the scourge of Nazi and totalitarian regimes? We came forward. Who came forward to save the planet or continents from financial ruin? We came forward with the Marshall Plan,” he said.
The nonbinding resolution was introduced Thursday by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass. Booker is one of several co-sponsors of the resolution that seeks to fight climate change. It calls for "net-zero greenhouse gas emissions" by 2030, as well as the elimination of carbon emissions for all major sectors of the U.S. economy. The resolution also calls for upgrading or replacing every single building in the country over a 10-year period to make them more environmentally friendly.
